I'm in the Governor's office today as Tate Reeves prepares to sign HB 1125 into law. It will ban gender-affirming healthcare for trans youth.
Reeves is going on about side effects of gender transition drugs, which are well documented and known about in the trans community. He says conservatives are under attack from the left for trying to question trans rights by being called transphobic.

These are the EU countries that have not joined the condemnation of #Hungary’s law banning the mentioning of homosexuality: 🇵🇱 🇬🇷 🇨🇾 🇮🇹 🇭🇷 🇸🇮 🇸🇰 🇨🇿 🇷🇴 🇧🇬 🇲🇹 🇦🇹 🇭🇺 🇵🇹 .

All countries that don’t have same sex marriage (except 🇵🇹 which maybe wants to be neutral during presidency).
To people who have been following these issues for a long time, there is little surprising in this split.

🇮🇹🇦🇹🇬🇷🇨🇾 remain the countries most hostile to LGBT rights in ‘western’ Europe, the Baltics have emerged as the countries least hostile to gay rights in ‘eastern’ Europe.
List of signatories now finalised (Latvia did sign on).

The letter, initiated by #Belgium, says Hungary's new laws represent "a flagrant form of discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression and hence deserves to be condemned"

Hiring processes that are opaque make it hard for talented people to join the Public Service- especially those coming from outside the NCR and who face systemic barriers.

To help shine a light on how to join GAC, a thread of (mostly) entry-level jobs to get in the door ⬇️⬇️⬇️
If you’re a student, apply for Co-op and FSWEP jobs. This will help you get a security clearance, which is like gold. You can get a foot in the door and start networking.

This closes March 6: Image
If you’re no longer a student, you can check jobs.gc.ca to see what departments are hiring external candidates. Once a year in October, the Post-Secondary Recruitment is run, and sometimes GAC has jobs posted.

#PiazzaFontana.

The one-sided live tweeting by the 🇭🇺 gvt spokesperson during #GAC @eu_council hearing was cynical but barely surprising for Hungarians.

It gives a rare insight into the tone and kind of propaganda & disinformation served on a daily basis in Hungary by all pro-gvt media. Image
In the meantime, the fact is that there is no disinterest and that #Article7 was launched by the EP, representing the citizens of Europe.

The same @Europarl_EN that the Hungarian gvt has been so tirelessly trying to keep out from these hearings.
Yes, these freedoms & many others will remain evergreen for anyone who has the slightest respect for EU values.

But are we surprised that the spox of a gvt that changes the constitution whenever politics dictates it doesn't understand what commitment to fundamental rights means? Image

1. With @EUCouncil #GAC finally debating #Article7 procedure about democratic backsliding in Hungary, time for thread about my forthcoming @jepp_journal article on why EU tolerates autocratic member states: "The European Union's Authoritarian Equilibrium" papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
2. Building on my earlier work & drawing on literature on 'subnational authoritarianism', the new paper explores why the EU, which professes a commitment to liberal democracy, has allowed some member governments to backslide toward competitive authoritarianism.
3. I argue EU has become trapped in an “authoritarian equilibrium” underpinned by 3 factors. 1st, (as I've written before) EU’s half-baked system of party politics & ingrained reluctance to interfere in domestic politics of members shield national autocrats from EU intervention
