A thread- Labour & the #IrishBorder. Last night @jonsnowC4 interviewed @Keir_Starmer on @Channel4News. Starmer put forward Lab's Customs Union idea as the solution, Snow then picked up this idea & asked him about a Norway deal. 1/
Despite what Starmer implied, a Customs Union on its own would not stop customs checks. It was only when the UK & Ireland joined the Single Market in 1993 that customs checks vanished. Lab oppose being in the Single Market. 2/

As it is, Norway is in the Single Market. But, as it is not in the EU's Customs Union, there are checks. @Freight_NI points out its one lorry every 35 sec on #IrishBorder at the moment while there's a delay of 10 ins on Norway/Sweden. 3/

A couple of thoughts on yesterday's ruling by @UKSupremeCourt and its implications for Brexit

1/
@UKSupremeCourt Recall that this case was at the edges of justicability, but Court was willing to extend broader principles into this area unanimously

2/
@UKSupremeCourt If government sought to evade responsibilities under Benn Act, then that would be much less problematic for Court to get stuck in

A thought about why Brexit's blocked: everyone's focused on outcome, not process

1/
For the past couple of years, different groups in the UK have built up deep preferences for particular outcomes to Brexit: leaving w deal, leaving w/o deal or remaining

2/
That's reflecting in the polarisation of opinion and the general lack of willingness to accept compromise positions.

Unfortunately, no one view has a majority, so there's a collective action problem

"Why @jeremycorbyn should back Ken Clarke for PM".
Ahead of 27 Aug meeting between Corbyn & other anti #NoDealBrexit politicians, I'll argue why it is in his & Lab's interest to back Ken Clarke as a temporary PM to support a #PeoplesVote rather than a #GE19. 1/
Here's Corbyn's 14 Aug letter where he set out the case for him becoming temporary PM with the "aim of calling a General Election". As LOTO, he has a very strong, reasonable case to put himself forward here. 2/
However @joswinson didn't think he'd get enough support in HoC. A look at top 50 LibDem target seats shows that they are mainly Tory ones. Supporting JC4PM would be used as a weapon by Tories to scare off Remainer Tory voters Lib Dems need. 3/

If #GE19 is coming, then it's coming sooner rather than later

1/
Notwithstanding summer recess, when move to GE can't happen (easily), it feels there's growing pressure to push the necessary button ASAP in September

2/
From opposition side, successful trial of #RemainAlliance model (even though huge problems of scaleability) and ability to overcome CON/BXP challenge will embolden parties

On it's own this is a small but embarrassing climbdown and it's not a major story, however it's a good reflection of the momentum that's going against @FineGael right now.

@LeoVaradkar's long honeymoon is now over. The party is not delivering on public services, on financial prudence, on housing or on tax cuts. The way the Mercusor deal is being spun is pissing off farmers and this insensitivity to Catholics is just icing on the cake.
3/5
The very poor performance in Dublin in #le19 and #ep2019 and declining poll numbers have now made #ge19 a frightening prospect for @FineGael but losing four bye-elections in November is just as awful, if they delay a general election.

Let's walk through EU side of extension-request-ing

1/
A reminder: all the EU27 will have to approve any extension to Art.50 beyond 29 March

2/
Given the gravity of this (plus the uncertainty of what the UK intends by it), that almost certainly needs Heads of Gvt-level agt, logically at #EUCO on 21-22 March
