The wave of teens seeking gender transition in the UK continues to grow. According to the most recent data released by #GIDS and its new referral service, after a COVID dip, referrals doubled 2021-22, for a total of 5,000+ referrals. Teen girls continue to dominate this trend. /1 
A new trend is also emerging: increasing numbers of referrals are not recorded by natal sex. Moreover, the fact that a new referral service (Arden & GEM) had to be tasked with handling gender-related child & adolescent referrals speaks to the degree of overwhelm faced by #GIDS./2
While these data are UK-specific, other Western countries are likely experiencing similar trends. It's vital to investigate the cause of the sharp rise in gender dysphoria in youth, in order to identify safe and effective treatment approaches that prioritize long-term health. /3

Following initial refusals @HayteratLords offered live on air on @BBCWomansHour to take a larger stand when told that smaller stands were taken.

The @CareQualityComm inspection report which found @TaviAndPort #GIDS service to be ‘inadequate’ is a truly shocking read. We are appalled at the spin that this is just about waiting times. It is not. This is a #safeguarding scandal. Full report here:

Questions must be asked (and answered) about why so many children were experiencing distress around gender in the first place. What has gone wrong in our society? Why are we failing to challenge gender stereotypes? What are children looking at online?

The regulatory capture in our society has gone so far that even the @CareQualityComm report into this scandal uses highly contested, ideological language such as ‘assigned sex at birth’. This must stop. Sex is observed at birth, usually by medical professionals.

3/ In § 22, we learn that till 2011, puberty-blockers were only prescribed to those over 16. From 2011~2014 children 12~15 were prescribed PB's, so was it 2014 or after that children as young as 10 got given them?

When I first worked at @TaviAndPort we psychologists used to say blockers were “fully reversible” but stopped doing so after medical colleagues told us the long-term health effects were not fully known.

The service’s own figures also suggest that in younger adolescents the hormone blocker may alter the developmental pathway.

A parent on a trans children support group has just said their teenage child has already been waiting for a year to access the @NHSEngland Monopoly service #GIDS @TaviAndPort & wants to know realistic time frames for each stage. Here is my response: 1/
- A minimum of 6 months more waiting for a first appointment (note waiting times have risen 6 months in the last 6 & show no signs of slowing).
- Once in the service there is a minimum of 4 appointments over a 6 month assessment period, this is often longer, rarely shorter 2/

- If your young person wants blockers, they need to be very clear. If they are unable to verbally express their dysphoria, have other conditions or issues, if they are not in full time education, or have an unsupportive family environment there are often further assessments 3/
