Moments like this is when you realise and ponder what the actual end result of the #GotaGoHome could be. The people started the protest due to the increased cost of living imposed by the #GOSL, the Government that the @sjbsrilanka vehemently told people not to vote for.

The economic troica including @HarshadeSilvaMP and @EranWick categorically warned the citizens and the Government since 2020. All those cries were left unheard. The @sjbsrilanka is the Main Opposition in the Country and was the first to bring in crowds to protest.

We were then ridiculed and told that we did all this in the middle of a pandemic etc. The sad part is that when you have people saying things like "Mind your own business, We will fight this through", It makes us think what the actual solution is.

THREAD: On the eve of #BlackJuly, we are redrawing attention to the months preceding the violence.

An often repeated myth is that the 1983 Black July pogroms were a response to the killing of 13 soldiers by the LTTE on July 23, 1983. This is false. #Tamil #lka
Violence from state actors had been increasing in the months ahead of #BlackJuly. Tamils were being killed at will. Human rights activists, political activists and militants were being detained and tortured. Local newspapers, including the Saturday Review, documented the violence
In April, SA David and Dr. Rajasundaram of the Gandhiyam Movement were arrested and held. They were severely tortured throughout. The Gandhiyam Movement was a non-violent movement, which assisted refugees, by setting up farms and distributing food.

Dual citizen BR to enter parliament on 6th of July. BR's objective is to dismantle this government by creating conflicts with the sub party leaders of the Sri Lanka People's freedom alliance.

He's accountable for organizing back-seat MP's to attack leading Cabinet Ministers such as @UPGammanpila , @weerawansa_w & Vasudeva N . BR, who does not even have a degree is going to be in charge of the finance ministry of #SriLanka just bcz his brother is now president.(2/4)
BR is more famously known as Mr. 10 % due to his long history of corruption. He used to demand 10% commission from every project. There is no wonder why Pres Kumaratunge called the Rajapaksa's " uneducated and uncultured rascals".

THREAD: The international response to the anti-Tamil pogroms of 1983, specifically the Tamil diaspora mobilization during this time, is often left out of our narratives. This resistance should be remembered and commemorated. #Tamil #lka #BlackJuly
