1 March 1864, President Lincoln nominated Ulysses S. Grant for a third star.

By 1864, Grant was only the second officer ever awarded the rank of LT Gen, George Washington was the other. Winfield Scott attained the rank but it was by brevet only, he didn't command with it.
Grant would go on to be the supreme commander of all Union Forces, and in 1868 he was elected as the 18th President of the United States. On 23 Dec. 2022, Congress officially authorized the appointment of GEN Grant to the rank of General of the Armies of the United States.
The present rank of General of the Armies was created for Washington in 1799 which went unfilled due to Washington’s death. Grant is the third general to be authorized for this promotion, Washington and Pershing are the other two. #Armyhistory @USArmy @TRADOC #Grant #CivilWar

Have you ever searched for "How to do a #LiteratureReview quickly/in 1 day/3 hours"?
And then spend the entire time getting lost in searching/ wallowing in tangential directions?

Here is a🧵on Quick #LitRev technique...

#AcWri #AcademicTwitter #PhDtips #phdlife #ScienceTwitter Image
From my fair share of struggle with literature reviews, I devised a technique that helped me do *quick* literature surveys, especially when I needed to
- write a #grant #proposal
- improve a half-written #manuscript
- learn a new method/theory

So, here you go...
1️⃣Collecting literature: Research Rabbit App

My go-to tool for literature discovery+visualize connection b/w them. (very essential for writing your LitRev, as you will need to draw connections between different works.) Image

1/ #Mentorship 🧵

This woman is my #mentor (pic w perm). Joan W Bennett. She’s in @theNASciences as geneticist & mycologist. Today we are at the Parthenon in Nashville TN where after 35 YEARS, she still provides me council…

2/ Dr. Bennett taught me that mentorship is not a job w an endpoint. She assumed this role IN my life FOR life. Today we talked as much about parenting as science. We are in each other’s front row. This is the depth of a true mentor-mentee relationship.

#MedEd @theNAMedicine
3/ Like any relationship, there must be chemistry & connection. If you don’t have that w a “mentor,” maybe you have the wrong person. Build a relationship not a business arrangement. It’s also NOT just a trajectory to promotion. #Mentorship is “whole” person care & development.

Writing a #grant or contemplating a grant? Here is my "top 10" list of mistakes, developed through a lot of blood, sweat, tears (many tears), applications, diverse study section service, and contemplative walks. Hope it helps! #epitwitter #medtwitter
1-Not asking for the “hard” feedback. I put this one first because once you fall in love with an idea, asking for critical feedback is hard! It’s like someone calling your baby ugly. At a minimum, ask for feedback on aims. (Everyone should have time for a 10-minute review.)
2-Thinking reviewers won’t find a weakness. I try to make a list of every weakness and address each one before submission. The reviewers will ALWAYS find the weakness, however buried. Might as well address up front.

I’ve been warning that there is much more than meets the eye as it pertains to everything going on. They said it’s about race and removed confederate #statues. They said it’s about discrimination and changed product lines. 1/5

I warned it’s an attempt to take down the system in order destroy society and rebuild society based on #socialism. I warned it was only a matter of time before they go after Washington, Jefferson, & others, to eradicate our #history. 2/5

I was told that wouldn’t happen. That most democrats are against this. Well, several #Washington and #Jefferson statues have been destroyed & Democrat mayors/elected officials have stated they will not be replaced. 3/5

I understand that any historical documentary has to make choices (although the emergence of the internet means that a "director's cut" can be made available).

In #Grant's case, were some of the limits self-imposed? @HISTORY
Lots of ads, lots of previews, and some interesting (and debatable) choices on what to spend time on and what to pass over or quickly summarize. #Grant @HISTORY
I wonder how much running time there really was over three nights at two hours/night, and how that compared to 2002's @AmExperiencePBS Grant program.

Let me tell you what really happened when Adelbert Ames asked Ulysses S. Grant to intervene in Mississippi in 1875.

#Grant #Grant3
Mississippi Democrats planned a shrewd terrorist strategy to triumph in 1875. The "peaceably if we can, forcibly if we must" them of the #MississippiPlan was in fact a program of carefully calibrated political violence framed in an awareness of federal government responses.
Governor Ames had already dealt with an outbreak of violence at Vicksburg, where Grant authorized federal intervention.

Ames was reluctant to mobilize a state militia that would have to draw upon black militiamen.

On #Grant @HISTORY ...

Last night I commented on #Grant1 (the first episode) after offering some observations earlier in the day about the genre in general. I wasn't surprised by what I saw, and I wasn't surprised by the reactions to it.
Let me concede at the beginning that I understand that some people will note inaccuracies with reenactor uniforms, terrain, weapons, etc. I tend to let that pass, but sometimes the issues took me out of the moment.
As for Grant, his uniform was wrong (he wore the coat of a major general as a brigadier general; I don't recall it being buttoned that way; he was primarily a pipe smoker before Donelson, and the story about how he used a cigar to direct operations would be funny.

Well if Grant wasn’t prophetic... I don’t know who is. This was taken from her speech he made in 1875. It’s equal parts prophetic and frightening. #GRANT #Civilwar
@MalcolmNance Love this when you first posted it on Facebook… Love it still when I found it on a truth or fiction site verifying this quote. Grant was oddly prophetic and frightening here.

As people gear up to watch #GRANT @History, we might want to ponder the way documentaries tell their stories and whether we might rethink that.
I remain curious as to whether the story we are about to see is remarkably different that the 2002 @AmExperiencePBS program on Grant. So far, in terms of content, that one spent more time on Grant as president. In terms of interpretation, I've see nothing new from #GRANT promos.
That Grant's story has been reduced to a mishmash of talking heads and reenactors (which many in the viewing audience more interested in examining the accuracy of the latter than the former) suggests that there's been a failure of imagination here.

Who was the better general? Robert E. Lee or Ulysses S. Grant? It’s a great question to consider in advance of the airing of @History’s “Grant” tonight. #Grant #CivilWar 1/8
The Battle of the Wilderness is a perfect case study for assessing the military skill of the two commanders. It’s the first time they faced each other on the battlefield. And even though Lee was outnumbered, he still possessed talented & experienced senior officers. #Grant 2/8
Let’s start with Robert E. Lee. He surprised Grant by pinning him down in the Wilderness instead of halting at his Mine Run works. Lee also skillfully oversaw the fighting on the Plank Road on May 5 and pivoted quickly to the offensive after a near disaster on May 6. #Grant 3/8

Everyone in #academia knows the struggle of getting a #grant through peer review – but despite how crucial it is to doing research, there’s very little research on how grant applications get funded!

When writing a #grant #proposal, note the following:

1.Ensure that your problem statement is data driven. Don't just write what you think the problem is. Give proven statistics and numbers. Google and leading institutions in that area are you first options.
2. Write in clear unambiguous sentences. Remember the person reading your proposal will probably read a 100 proposals or more.
Make it easy for them to grasp your message at a glance. A number of spacing and a detailed summary will do. It doesn't have to be exactly 400 words..
3. Give real like examples. Mention names. Mentions scenerios that actually happened. Share experiences. Be as real as possible without crossing the line.
