The broad ‘progressive’ side of Australia risks drawing all the wrong conclusions from the election - especially about climate and Adani - and it could cost us all dearly.

(A thread /1)
One of the biggest mistakes came when people accepted the implication that Adani/coal = jobs. From the moment that ALP MPs and candidates were being effectively forced to sign pledges to support coal projects because of ‘jobs’, the LNP got a massive boost. /2
Adani, of course, wants to automate its whole endeavour and provide only 1,400 jobs. The right knows this & had been seeking to fight the whole thing as part of a culture war, with coal as a proxy. That was a fight they were doomed to lose. /3

Ah, the #EuropeanParliamentElection knocks at the door! Let’s see who is #campaigning for what…In #Italy, a #rightwingcoalition calls for a #guaranteedincome, #largerpensions, and resistance to the heavy-handed #austerityprograms enforced by the #EuropeanUnion.
In #France, some #rightwinggroups champion #fight against #climatechange, decry #exploitation of #foreignworkers, growing #economicinequality. What about the #centerright and #centerleft parties? #Polls show they will lose their #majority, and the Euroskeptics bag 30+% of seats.
However, #Euroskeptic, like #populist, is a term that obscures more than it reveals. #Spain’s leftist #Podemos isn’t likely to break bread with #Italy’s rightist #NorthernLeague-#M5S, but both are considered #Euroskeptic. Some are really #wolves but wear #sheepskins.

The #Greens have today launched our human rights based approach to Aged Care including 50,000 home care packages and a pay rise for aged care workers bit.ly/CaringforOlder… #auspol #agedcare #AgedCareRC
It's been clear for years now that there are significant issues within the aged care sector and for too long aged care has been put in the too hard basket. We can’t keep tinkering around the edges. We need a comprehensive plan for how we are going to care for older Australians.
Our plan: 1. Guarantees a human rights based approach to aged care 2. Provides funding for an additional 50,000 Level 3 and 4 Home Care Packages over three years at a cost of $5.491billion

"Did you notice that the Morrison government has slashed Australia's Paris climate target in half?"

The #Greens did, and we're bloody furious about it. Here's the simple version of the conservatives' latest bastardry (a thread).

smh.com.au/environment/cl…
Over 20 years ago, at the 1997 Kyoto climate Conference, Australia joined other countries to work out what our first 'target' for reducing emissions would be. Australia insisted on receiving special treatment and demanded it be allowed to INCREASE our carbon emissions.

/2
So our first target: We could INCREASE our emissions by 8% on 1990 levels over 2008-2012 (and 1990 was a very high year for emissions).

Beating this weak target wasn't difficult at all.

Mega Thread of Opinion (1 of 52)

My take on #Election2019, is one that will surprise all #Canadians who will take the #time to read past this #headline. It will be a #long #series of #tweets that will be #purely #honest & straight to the #point.
This #series of tweets will contain #jabs at #voters, the #media & our #political #parties & they are #jabs, that in my own #opinion are #merited. Agree or don’t agree, I won’t care, but it needs to be said to ease my conscience in the lead up to our election!
In 2015, Canada’s #media, declared that #Trudeau & .@liberal_party outflanked the @NDP on leftist policies & for the 1st time in recent history the media supported large deficits & destruction of our country’s finances over a more balanced approach. Let’s stop here for a sec.

The Government must suspend #robodebt during the legal challenge in the Federal Court #centrelink #auspol #greens

theguardian.com/australia-news…
Two years ago I chaired the senate inquiry into the #robodebt debacle and the evidence we heard was both devastating because of the human consequences and gobsmacking in the brazen way the Gov threw out fairness to pick on some of the most vulnerable people #auspol #greens
Since that senate inquiry the Government has tweaked around the edges, but it has not addressed the underlining unfairness of the program and people are still being harassed for money they do not owe and cannot pay #auspol #greens #robodebt #centrelink

1/ Transparency International (@anticorruption) have just released their 'corruption perception index' rankings for the last year

It's a global rank of government corruption. We came 13th #Auspol #DemocracyForSale

2/ Since 2012, we've slipped from 7th to 13th and to be honest, it's not actually that hard to see why...

3/ In that same time period (since 2012), @LiberalAus and @AustralianLabor have received more than $100 million from some of the biggest corporations in #Auspol (and the World!) through political donations, or other means - such as 'business forums'

Labor is voting with the Coalition to take support away from migrants. Their decision is punitive & reeks of xenophobia.

I know the impact their vote will have, because 27yrs ago the support I received when I arrived in Australia is the only reason I'm here today

1/x #auspol
I came here as a migrant in 1992, with my husband, my one year old son and 2 suitcases - A very typical migrant story.
My husband and I - both engineers- were told that there was an acute shortage in Australia and there were lots of jobs available for us. But when we got here, things were quite different. We applied for hundreds of jobs and never got a look in.

THREAD:
Why has there been such a shockingly poor response from the Green Party to #AimeeChallenor crisis? Maybe the fact that all their internal communication representatives on GP Executive Committee are transgender (non-binary) trans activists has something to do with it.? 1/6
Molly Arthurs, Lee-Anne Lawrance & Tom Pashby job-share the role of “Internal Communications Co-ordinator” on the Green Party Executive (GPEx). All three identify as “non-binary”, and call themselves “they”. The GPEx is “responsible for the day to day running of the party” 2/6
So the people who control internal comms at the #Greens also control the narrative re the important Qs raised by the #Challenor crisis. This may explain why @CarolineLucas’s article failed to understand the sex-based exemptions in the Equality Act, or engage with concerns 3/6
