8 years after independence, in 1956, the govt of Sri Lanka passed the Sinhala Only Act, making Sinhala the sole language of the island. Tamils held peacful protests against this oppression and the Sinhalese mobs retaliated in the form of a riot that killed more than 150 Tamils
10 years after independence, in 1958, tensions grew and Sinhalese mobs were growing impatient with the mere site of Tamils existing, the 1958 anti Tamil pogroms took place. Sinhala mobs went after Tamils as the government looked on and in many cases aided the mobs.
