In 1939, the United States had the 19th best military in the World. We moved to number 18 when Holland fell to Germany. America learned how to do big things in a very short period of time. We are doing/building big things again. newrepublic.com/article/135684…
Construction spending by US manufacturers more than doubled over the past year. For April 2023, the annual rate reached nearly $190 billion compared with $90 billion in June 2022, with manufacturing accounting for around 13% of non-government construction. businessinsider.com/us-building-fa…

Why is it cheaper to add a more expensive #geothermal resource to the grid than add more cheap solar?
My keynote talk at the Dept of @ENERGY Enhanced Geothermal Shot Summit this morning has the answers to this counter-intuitive riddle. Here's my slides: dropbox.com/s/aa6woifltsis… Image
In recent years, wind, solar and battery costs have plummeted, dropping by nearly 90% for solar PV and Lithium-ion battery packs and by more than two-thirds for onshore wind. Image
In fact, supportive public policy (RD&D & early-market deployment subsidies/mandates) have transformed these once-expensive "alternative energy" sources into THE CHEAPEST source of new electricity we can add to our grids.
Not cheapest CLEAN resources.
The cheapest, period. Image

A lately published paper by @rosner_fabian, Schamberger & @hanna_breunig present "a novel #DirectAirCapture concept whereby cooling towers at #geothermal power plants are hybridized to capture CO2 at very #lowcost."

Details in a 🧵below⬇️
[1/6] Image
"The system design is elegant in its ability to overcome key technical challenges and highlights the potential for using existing infrastructure to lower #DirectAirCapture cost and land footprint, and secure utilities and public confidence."
2/6 Image
"The techno-economic analysis suggests a cost-of-capture of $100 per metric tonne of CO2 is feasible, allowing #geothermal facilities to increase their net profit by $29 per metric tonne of CO2 captured — or $6 million per year — under the 45Q tax credit."

Today and tomorrow, @G7 #Energy ministers meet in #Japan – a country, often considered a “laggard” on #energytransition. What is 🇯🇵’s energy system like and why is it so reluctant to step up #decarbonisation of its economy? A 🧵 1/19

env.go.jp/en/earth/g7/20…
The “usual” arguments by the 🇯🇵 government when confronted with lack of both action and ambition on #energytransition:
1. #Japan is resource-poor
2. Japan’s geography limits #renewables build-out
3. Technologies & Innovation will solve the transition

How true are they? 2/19
Japan is indeed poor in some resources, most notably #fossilfuels. Fossil fuel based, its energy system is 88% dependent on #oil, #LNG and #coal imports. It has one of the least self-sufficient energy systems, dependent on #oil & gas from #MiddleEast & #coal from #Australia. 3/19 ImageImage

What an amazing few weeks for #Nuclear Power. First, DOE launched the #NuclearLiftoff Report. Sober, well reviewed and realistic: liftoff.energy.gov/wp-content/upl…
The Pathways to Commercial Liftoff: Advanced Nuclear report found that the U.S. will need between 550-770 GW of additional clean, firm power to complement the deployment of variable renewables in order reach net-zero by 2050.
All #CleanFirm resources come with Pluses and minuses that we try to define for the first time. Please give us feedback!

@EcoSenseNow 1) i'll wade into this: if these electric devices are geared to use energy efficently, that i know is possible then a lower energy demand would be needed that could be filed by sustainable energy not from fossil fuels. that everyone is scapegoating b/c its not JUST co2 >
@EcoSenseNow 2) in that smoke coming outa that motor or coal smokestack, its the other toxic shit as well. tell the whole story not just pic and choose, half truths are lies in disguise.

ex: if you build an energy efficient home, not necessarily something that the epa suggests, but one
@EcoSenseNow 3) but one that puts over and above the baseline suggestions on the EXTERIOR of a home. the structures temperature never has to be adjusted. this is called thermal conductivity. its like a utensil used to cook with. so here we have a building that takes less electricity

In two preregistered studies (N>3000 from 8 countries), we provide first evidence supporting a new *trust inoculation* that can be implemented to protect climate mitigation actions against negative persuasive attacks. psyarxiv.com/zau32/

Interested? 🧵1/7
Negative attacks towards climate mitigation actions are ubiquitous in public discourse, and traditional interventions require preemptive knowledge about the argumentation used in these attacks to build psychological defenses.
2/7
To overcome this and create an inoculation that can be used regardless of the content of incoming attacks, we developed a trust inoculation: we made every aspect of the trustworthiness of key energy actors salient, as an attitudinal protection that we tested against...

Getting the whole world to #netzero #GHGs rapidly is going to be incredibly difficult. But given how strong and organized the #climateopposition is, we must distinguish #thesignalfromthenoise on which pathways are the most likely to succeed. A 🧵 on how I think about this 1/14
2/ First, we cannot rely on social and lifestyle change governed by new paradigms like degrowth to deliver in time for this #climatedecade. But if the movement delivers small reductions in energy or meat consumption, we need it jackrabbithomes.org/can-we-save-th…
3/ #Technologyandpolicy (and politics) need to do the heavy lifting. Can they deliver? Yes, but to effectively channel our efforts and fight off the opposition, we need to distinguish between main courses, side dishes and poison pills (frequently buried in the side dishes)

Starting now. After brief opening statement by Chair Schwertner. Sen @whitmire_john asks why do we have to incentivize power plants to do what they're supposed to? Sen Nichols says they're profit seeking companies and they won't invest unless they can make money.
Whitmire responds: are you talking about providing government subsidies for gas generation? Tells Nichols he's sounding like the Biden Administration. Not sure why we would throw incentives at thermal generation.

Whitmire says we've reshuffled boards and commissions but we may be worse off now in terms of energy reliability than we were in February.

With legislation committing California to 100% carbon-free electricity sitting on Gov. Brown’s desk, I wanted to share a timely new peer-reviewed article out today in the journal, @Joule_CP: cell.com/joule/fulltext…
In the paper, @nsepulvedam, @FdeSisternes, Prof. Richard Lester and I use detailed power system modeling to identify strategies that lower the costs and increase the odds of reaching a zero-carbon electricity grid. Check out MIT News coverage of the paper: technologyreview.com/s/611987/how-c…
After ~1,000 cases covering possible future tech cost, regional diffs in renewables quality & demand, and different limits on CO2, our study consistently demonstrates the best way to zero out electricity emissions is to deploy a balanced mix of low-carbon electricity sources.
