I really fail to understand the number of people I see actually defending #Russia re: #Ukraine.
2. #Russia has security concerns. I agree. History and geography necessitates they are going to be wary of being attacked, particularly across the North European Plain.
3. But if you want to keep your neighbors out of a rival alliance, invading, seizing territories, ignoring security guarantees previously given, interfering with their internal affairs, and massing hundreds of thousands of troops on their borders doesn't seem like the best method

NOTHING PERSONAL? STRICTLY BUSINESS?
1/3: At first glance, these Russian company appointments look like commercial strategy. They, it seems, belong to the PRIVATE life of retired Western politicians who get remunerated for some Russian lobbying at home. Fishy, but understandable.
2/3: Yet, the example of #GerhardSchröder's role for the #Kremlin in Germany indicates that the appointments are part of a Russian GEOPOLITICAL strategy. It would be therefore of interest what position the POLITICAL homes of these Western politicians take.
3/3: Since the companies, the politicians work for are parts or clients of the Russian state, the parties where the politicians remain influential, like the #SPD, #LesRepublicains etc, turn into frameworks of Moscow's foreign affairs. Is that desirable, permissible, tolerable...?

1. In a strange case of putting internal party procedures over electoral strategy, the @CDU and @Die_Gruenen have both nominated chancellor candidates with little national profile and Berlin experience.
2. As it looks now, the next German chancellor - with an already now sharp national profile as current minister of finance - may well be from the @spdde. As a former @FESonline scholar, I am happy for the social democrats, as a whole.
3. Yet, I am also worried that some surprisingly unprincipled and corrupt elements in the party may, as a result of the @_Bundestagswahl this month, get into a position to determine Germany's future Eastern policies.
