The first #woonerf, Tuinstraat in Delft was the result of citizen action against a traffic plan that turned a street in to a driving shortcut. Residents reclaimed the space for play & socialization by installing barriers & trees & the city conceded

Woonerfs are safe extensions of the home in to the street. They are designed to slow traffic & provide space for play & socialization between residents. These semi private spaces allow residents to personalize the front of their home with planting & seating

Another legacy of the #Woonerf is the #Geveltuin (facade garden) policy in Dutch cities. The policy encourages residents to remove a portion of paving stones in front of their home & replace them with green space.
