THREAD: How the attack on Gillette’s “Integrity” is Actually a Larger Cultural Inoculation.
1 in 5 women in US are rape survivors. That’s approximately 29 million human beings. Bullying is at epidemic levels among the children in our schools and among adults in the workplace. /1
Gillette dropped an ad about men stepping up to challenge bullying and sexual abuse. The uproar has been significant. Gillette’s ad has been attacked as cynical virtue signalling. Gillette’s history as a company has been raised, bringing Gillette’s “integrity” into question. /2
Go to any Facebook thread about #GilletteAd and integrity argument comes up over and over. It’s part of a pitched cultural battle feeding directly into the coming 2020 elections, determining tax policy, women’s rights, environ. policy, immigration, health care policy and more. /3

The men who are losing their shit over this ad feel attacked precisely because they're the "bad guys" in the commercial. They know that, and we know that. But they still want us to have this debate on how masculinity is "under attack". No, assholes are under attack.

The ad itself is probably the gentlest, kindest way I've ever seen toxic masculinity called out in the mainstream. If anything, it talks about how masculinity can be empowering and powerful without hurting others. It actually celebrates good men.
Spoiler: with toxic men, there is no good/kind/gentle way to tell them they're being toxic. None. The ad isn't for them. It's to encourage other men to hold toxic men accountable and raise boys to not be toxic. The ad isn't for all men.
