(3/x) Image

🧵All COPs are disappointing; they never do enough to slow warming to keep the planet and its people safe. Year after year, COPs show the power of the fossil fuel industry and its cruel indifference to the planetary suffering it is causing & the climate chaos it will soon unleash
But if you look hard enough, it’s possible to see several positive outcomes from #COP27 . This COP made important progress on several key fronts, inc holding the line on 1.5°C & noting tipping points incl in the cryosphere.

#COP27 also made progress on #methane, mostly outside the COP: 150 countries plus the EU are now part of the #GlobalMethanePledge, including vulnerable islands & other states

Last month, @WMO reported that methane emissions are rising faster than ever.

Today, we explore how governments fail to tackle methane emissions from animal agriculture—and why we need to slash methane emissions now to tackle #GlobalWarming and ensure a livable future. 1/13 Image
2020 and 2021 saw the largest increases in methane emissions since records began, according to @WMO.

Their data indicates that biological sources, such as agriculture, are responsible, rather than #methane from gas leaks. @ConservationOrg reports. 2/13 conservation.org/blog/news-spot…
Animal agriculture contributes to global warming through GHG emissions, including methane and nitrous oxide.

Millions of ruminant animals raised for food globally, such as cows and sheep, emit #methane through a process called enteric fermentation. 3/13

‼️SUBMISSIONS DUE BY 5PM - tips in 🧵

The NSW EPA has the power to make reducing #coal mine #methane a priority in its new climate plan. Even a super short submission makes a difference: getupau.typeform.com/to/rTnPzhd0

#GlobalMethanePledge #MoveBeyondCoal
Ask the EPA to use its authority to take quick action to:

1. Reduce NSW coal mine methane at least 75% by 2030, the amount the IEA says is required for Net Zero by 2050.

2. Recommend no new coal mines or expansions be approved.
3. Require coal companies to cut their methane emissions using all available technology.

4. Require companies to actually measure and transparently report their emissions.

We released the expanded @IEA Global #Methane Tracker today with our latest estimates of emissions and abatement potential. 🔗iea.li/methane

For the first time, we've built in info on policies and regulations. I want to highlight a few interesting findings.

1/9
Over 110 countries joined the #GlobalMethanePledge last year, which targets a 30% reduction in human-caused methane by 2030.

But without concrete policies and regulations, the world won't meet this target. Voluntary action by companies alone won't be enough.

2/9
Today's new policies page of the Tracker shows what tried and tested policies can achieve.

These policies have already been proven effective. If every country adopted them, emissions from the oil and gas sector could be cut in half.

The #GlobalMethanePledge is being launched now at COP26. Result of a massive diplomatic effort by the #EU and the #US, the pledge has now joined over 80 signatories, covering over 2/3 of the global GDP and about 46% of the global #methane emissions. 1/8 unfccc-cop26.streamworld.de/webcast/high-l…
The signatories pledge to cut 30% of global CH4 emissions by 2030, targeting all major emitting sectors #agriculture, #waste, #energy. This is a major step forward & the first time CH4 made it to the top of Global Leaders' priorities list. Many more steps needed looking ahead 2/8
The pledge covers emissions that can be reduced via targeted measures - a lot, but not enough to keep CH4 emissions aligned with 1.5C goal. another 10-15% of reductions must take place via indirect measures incl. #energyefficiency and changes in energy consumption patterns 3/8
