1/ #ReshetKeshet. For #KiTisa, I taught my explanation for why they chose a calf as the object of worship. My exegetical method (parshanut) is peshat focused. I define peshat as an attempt for a necessary interpretation of the text (as opposed to 'drash' which is a possible one)
2/ Why a young, male cow? There could be a lost external significance to that animal, e.g. the Egyptians worshipped cows. We're told that this was the reason for a lamb for the Pesach offering, except: it can also be a goat. And nowhere is cow worship mentioned in Tanakh.
3/ It's tendentious b/c it requires an "okimta" i.e. outside data not found in the text. That takes it outside peshat.

Note, Ramban suggests the Pesach is a lamb b/c the month of Nisan is Aries in the Zodiac. This is more of an internal proof (Pesach needs to be in the Spring).

The Purim story is driven by an act of resistance: Mordecai’s refusal to bow to the authoritarian vizier Haman.

But it’s unclear why Mordecai refused to bow to Haman as this would seemingly have been standard protocol given Haman’s status. Two complementary explanations are:

1. He lacks compassion.
The Bible says: “As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with #compassion, #kindness, #humility, #meekness, & #patience.” (Colossians 3:12)
2. He appeals to fear and anger- “But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment; if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; if you say ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire.” (Matthew 5: 22)
3. enamored with “greatness” & ego not goodness
“Blessed are meek, they will inherit earth. Blessed are those who hunger & thirst for righteousness, they will be filled. Blessed are merciful, they will receive mercy. Blessed are pure in heart, they will see God” (Matthew 5: 5-8)
