⚠️⚖️ Newly-released letters show the Chief Justice has repeatedly suggested Seamus Woulfe should resign from the Supreme Court over #golfgate - believing it is the most appropriate means "to maintain public confidence in the Supreme Court" and justice in general @VirginMediaNews
Letters published by the Chief Justice Frank Clarke show him telling Woulfe that while it wasn't an offence to attend the #golfgate dinner, a judge should not have attended any event which may have been organised in breach of law or which looked like it might have been
Even if the dinner had been lawful, Woulfe says, it still didn't comply with the objective of the regulations, which was to prevent large numbers of people mingling at social events. The fact the new health measures did not have force of law at the time was immaterial

At the Oireachtas #covid19 Committee, Michael Gillespie of the Teachers Union of Ireland says 'we will not put students, their families or our teachers at risk'.
Both ASTI and TUI have asked for fast-track testing for the school sector.

"Why was there no recommendation to put perspex screens at teachers' desks? Why is there no guidance on assemblies of students and staff at school?"
ASTI: "It is unconscionable" that teachers with chronic kidney disease, cancer and serious heart disease have been asked to teach large groups of students.

Who else were at #golfgate?

John Sweeney and his wife Treena were at the dinner they sat at table 5 along with supreme court judge Seamus Woulfe, Fianna Fail Senator Paul Daly, Bernie Daly, the Ambassador of Morocco, former Labour Senator Lorraine Higgins and Maura O Connor
2
Brian Hayes the head of the Banking Payments Federation of Ireland was beside them at the next table

The Stationhouse Hotel was once owned by
John & Treena Sweeney with Hugh Duffy company name Blackshore holdings which went into liquidation with debts of almost €400 million.

That doesn't stop the likes of John Sweeney.

He is now a director of Sea Strand Properties along with James Sweeney , which secured planning permission last year to develop a €32m 172-room hotel property on Amiens Street in Dublin.

These people are untouchable.

NEW: Former Chief Justice, Susan Denham, to review Seamus Woulfe’s attendance at the #golfgate dinner Image
Unprecedented for the Supreme Court (as a whole) to seek an outside review of a judge’s actions away from the bench - the only previous reviews related to someone’s actions as a judge
Though it obviously makes sense to have an eminent former Chief Justice as the outside arbiter, it’s also pretty much impossible for another sitting judge to independently review the case because, as AG, Woulfe was at the cabinet that appointed so many of them!

"Details matter" says EU Commission spokeswoman regarding Phil Hogan's story, saying that Ursula von der Leyen has received a dossier from Hogan accounting for his movements but has requested further clarification #golfgate
"There are legal aspects involved, and there are moral aspects involved as well," says Commission spox @DanaSpinant.
She says she is 'confident' Hogan will be available to media; notably unlike Taoiseach, ministers etc, he has not yet appeared to take questions from journalists.
She actually said "details count" and "details are important" sorry

Taoiseach on radio with Claire Byrne now... 👀
Taoiseach says Commissioner Hogan's statements have created "doubts in our minds"...

He says they asked for a full explanation because breaching lockdown in Kildare would be "very serious" in addition to attendance of dinner.

Taoiseach says public needs "Absolute assurances" that restrictions in Kildare were not breached.

"I feel given the discrepancy (over statements)... he needs to be very clear to the public."

Bear with me because this will take more than one tweet. As the fallout of #golfgate continues to reverberate attention has turned to @PhilHoganEU. No-one has asked if the request of @MichealMartinTD & @LeoVaradkar are appropriate? @BrigidLaffan
2. Commissioner is wholly independent of Irish Gov. Article 17 of TEU references independence twice & Commissioners swear an oath to that effect. If it were a German or French Commissioner who attended the event would Irish Gov ask them to consider their position. @BrigidLaffan
3. @PhilHoganEU is accountable to political processes beyond Ireland. For the EU to lose its trade Commissioner when he has has just launched a review has significant implications for the EU beyond Irish domestic politics & thus this is a matter of EU not Irish politics

@VirginMediaNews
Spox: MM&LV “did speak with Commissioner Hogan today and asked him to consider his position.

They both believe that the event should never have been held, that the Commissioner’s apology came late and that he still needs to give a full account and explanations of his actions.”

Well! That was quite the 24-ish hours. We don’t quite know the full ramifications it all yet but it feels important to remember and document everything.

So… a thread:
7pm on 20 August: The Irish Examiner published the story and @aoifegracemoore tweets it out. In my version, she hit send while taking a big gulp of red wine like Olivia in Scandal (before she went bad).

By 8.40pm, political reporters and correspondents are being texted then-Minister Dara Calleary’s apology.

This week Noel Grealish was outgoing chair of the Oireachtas golf club, when 81 guests from all over the country, including Minister Darragh Calleary, went on the piss together in Galway.
#golfgate
Noel Grealish in the past, claimed that people seeking asylum in Ireland are here to "sponge off the system".

In 2008 Darragh Calleary opposed a direct provision centre in his area because it would "drive tourists away".

Just a sample of Oireachtas members' approaches to DP
Fast forward to this week & we've a situation where some people who demonised asylum seekers, left them in dreadful conditions, where Covid19 could spread rapidly, are having a jolly in Galway while the virus runs riot in Direct Provision centres.
