In many ways I see this trend as suddenly Doctor who is a woman. James Bond is gay, etc to be extremely dehumanizing and appropriative.
Fans have emotional relationships with characters. Appeal is a HUGE part of that. Screw around with gender/orientation and you fuck that up.

Superficially, it may seem like activism, but in reality, it creates a bogus "equality" by equally denying masculinity and femininity.
A man attracted to a woman is same as man attracted to man is same as woman attracted to woman, etc. It is an emotional violation.

My bestie's 9 yo is writing a book and creating characters. Plot is "An angel named Angie & a demon named Charlie work together to stop a monster who is a son of the devil" and I said "wow, you are Neil himself" but the joke didn't land cos she's never read @neilhimself

Pitfalls of dressing like this as a professor. I sent a paper to the office printer and it was stuck so I went to the copy room and there were 2 students there struggling with the printer and said "oh you must be the IT guy. Could you fix this please?" 😂😂😂

This is my copy of Wee Free Men. My Nan got it signed. You can tell, because she gave my full name. She was German by birth, didn't suffer fools & had an aptitude for arithmetic. Until Alzheimer's did its nasty little thing. She died in 2015. It was the year for it, it seems.

And that all seems rather apt, doesn't it? Because Wee Free Men is, in part, a story of a girl and her grandmother. So perhaps it's not surprising that I have a fondness for this book.

Cool things to look out for if you’re watching #GoodOmens for the first time... (thread)
Crowley is always on Aziraphale’s left (except in the right-hand-drive Bentley), and if forced out of that position he circles him to get there. Traditionally the “devil” was on/over one’s left shoulder. Latin for left is sinistram, from which we get “sinister”.
Speaking of the Bentley, look out for its number plate... (hint: it’s a Monty Python reference)
Something else that was important to me this year: I reread and watched #GoodOmens. I saw the posters all around Hanover just when I got more and more frustrated with "American Gods" (the series - the book is great), I remembered that I had read the book fifteen years ago without
buying it - it belonged to my then boyfriend. At the time I did not enjoy it overly, I was just busy discovering Terry Pratchett and there books I liked much better. And, being honest, the book is not without its flaws, but when I bought it just after the seminar on Kant's
philosophy of history had ended (it was always from 8 to 10 am), sitting down in some cafe, I got hooked immediately while I listened to Crowley's thoughts about the origin of Good and Evil (the human heart) or about free will, which he and Aziraphale being a demon and an angel,

THREAD: As I’ve become mildly obsessed with #GoodOmens , I’ve been giving some thought as to why.
To begin ... the book. I bought my first copy in 1991. It now looks somewhat tattered and extremely well-loved because it's been read so often.

It's still holding together only because I bought a hardback and another pb to lend. It has been one of my go-to books at times when I need to be reminded that the world is a good place and that there is so much to enjoy in life. Including the writers’ wicked sense of humour.
Then there is the fact that @neilhimself not only wrote the screenplay, but kept close control of the whole process to ensure it was true to what the wonderful #SirTerryPratchett would have wanted.
Y’all I need to talk #GoodOmens Aziraphale’s hands are an ARC. His journey can be seen in the way he positions & moves his hands. Hear me out on this. @michaelsheen is incredible y’all.

I’m gay, and I’ve just left my church of fifteen years to come out. I’ve already left my church job, lost my network, my home, most of my friends, and my family’s understanding. In a really strange time in my life, a little bit apocalyptic, #GoodOmens was a heartstopping watch.
It had all the joy of the book. But what really undid me were the scenes @neilhimself added. My queer friends who saw their loves in Aziraphale and Crowley are yelling happily about the new romantic parts; my book fandom friends are shouting their delight over the new ending.
Love those too. What put me over the edge were a trio of new scenes between Aziraphale and heaven’s angels. I already saw something I needed in him. I was raised in the little world of my church, and watching him standing bewildered on Eden’s Eastern Gate hit home.

When we call something queerbaiting, we're essentially saying: "source material X doesn't count as real or valid queer representation." Here is a thread on why we need to be cognizant about which real-life queer people & stories we're erasing when we expand our use of that term.
First: actual queerbaiting, in which art-creators hint at queer representation in order to attract viewers and then insist their art was 100% hetero all along, sucks a lot. I am not advocating getting rid of the term.
Nor am I saying it's not valid to feel jerked around when a show uses the promise of a specific queer relationship on their publicity circuit, and then doesn't follow through on it in the actual source. (Or follows through only to write out a character, a la #TheMagicians)
