It never hurts to "start over" as you approach your fall courses. Some have already been doing this; others have been waiting till Aug. arrived. If you haven't "rethought" your courses in a few semesters, then now is a perfect time.

I've struggled with depression for 6 years. Trying to complete my M.A. during a pandemic has been exceeding difficult. Campus? Closed. Libraries? Closed. Archives? Closed. I’ve had to re-learn how to learn in isolation.

In 2019, I worked as a stripper for 4 months, while attending full-time M.A. classes and working PT. I lost both jobs in March 2020. I didn’t have classes again until Jan 2021. It felt like the rug was ripped out. Pandemic dragged, my depression got worse.

Sgoutas-Emch et al write about cohort hiring as a strategy to diversity #STEM faculty hires. This paper focuses on increasing the representation of women of color in UCSD’s STEM departments and outlines the steps of their cohort hiring ftp.arizonaea.org/home/68489.htm 2/6

After reviewing 10+ manuscripts for journals (across 3 disciplines) in the past 4 months I have a few pieces of advice for #gradstudents and young #EconTwitter academics:
1.) Precision: this refers to writing in active voice instead of passive voice. I struggle with this myself..
And have been reminded of this by mentors all the time, but it truly makes for better writing. Active voice helps you be direct about your writing. Objective writing does not mean passive writing.
2.) Be Concise: one of the common issues I find in writing is really long sentences - especially in the intro. Shorter sentences can make a very impactful statement too. Don’t be choppy and don’t just drone on and on and on and...you get the point... find that happy medium.

I am going up for tenure next year & preparing my materials. There is a book chapter I was invited to write in Fall 2014 just months after I got my PhD. I submitted the chapter in Spring 2015. The edited collection this chapter was written for has still not been published.
I am sure there are decent reasons for the immense slowdown in production. But can you imagine if I was relying on this publication as a junior scholar? I write this piece less than a year after graduating & will likely have tenure before its published. That’s bananas.
As someone working in disability studies I know there was many reasons for delays in schedules, but as a multiply marginalized junior scholar I also know that one publication coming in YEARS late could really fuck with someone’s tenure case.

As y'all know, I study higher ed lobbyists and used to work for one. A friend asked how I would lobby against the Graduate School Tuition Waiver Tax if I were still in the game. I thought about it, and here’s how I would tell students to oppose the #GradStudentTax (Thread): 1/19
First, I would shorten the name of the Graduate School Tuition Waiver Tax to the “Grad Student Tax.”

AKA: #GradStudentTax

Is it reductive? Yes. Does it get the point across? Also, Yes.
