Small holes were made with hand-held drills and filled with explosive to blast the rock. Some drill holes can still be found at the site.

150 victims of the #Titanic are buried in 3 #Halifax cemeteries: Fairview Lawn, Mount Olivet and Baron de Hirsch. 149 have #headstones from the Hanson #Quarry in #NB. A #Dal prof spent 15 years figuring out where the stones are from cuz there are no historical records.
#nspoli Image
The stones and the #quarry were tested for #mineralogy, texture, chemical composition and age to see if they matched. That's harder than it sounds - the original rock is no longer in the quarry (it was extracted) and these features can vary within a deposit.
#nspoli #NovaScotia Image
Still, the analysis suggests the stones, donated by #titanic-owner #WhiteStar in 1912, are almost certainly from there.
The #headstones are 422 million-year-old #gabbro (aka black #granite) and a popular #Halifax tourist attraction.

#SesameStreet is 50!
Its set is based on a typical #Harlem #brownstone neighborhood. #Brownstones are a type of townhouse that are mainly brick but have #sandstone facades. They became popular in the 1800s and today are an iconic image of #NewYork.

The stone was mainly provided by the #Portland #Brownstone #Quarry which operated for 300 years until it closed in 2012. It was on the #ConnecticutRiver which made shipping easy.
Portland is named for Portland #England, a place famous for its quarries.

Steam-powered machines in the 1800s allowed the #sandstone to be cut and shaped faster and more cheaply than ever before, making it affordable - significantly cheaper than stones like #granite or #marble. The stone is pink when cut but turns brown as it weathers.

#Mining built #NovaScotia!
Construction on St. Bernard Church in #Digby County began in 1910 and took 32 years to complete because the parish was determined not to go into debt. It's made of #granite from the #Shelburne Island Park #Quarry which operated from 1890-1960s.

#Mining built #NovaScotia!
The Saint-Bernard church was built with over 8000 blocks of granite shipped by rail from #Shelburne to Little Brook Station, and then taken by ox cart over a gravel road to the construction site. Due to weather, this was only done 7 months/year.
