Here are some ways you can make your layout/apartment/gated community more water sustainable...๐Ÿงต
Hereโ€™s the challenge:

In a layout, how can we convert water from an individual, private resource, to an #equitable resource?
Imagine everybody using multiple straws to procure water from the same glass.

Is there an alternative to everybody sinking a #borewell, competing with each other to draw #water? How can this alternative be #sustainable?

#Punjab #Farmers were encouraged to shift away from #bajra #pulses #oilseeds #chana & enter #wheat-#paddy cycle by a assured price mechanism policy; why not assure MSP for #pulses to Punjab farmers, which can cut 16,627 crore imports, reduce paddy acreage & paddy #straw ?
An example to show, how the shift from pulses in Punjab happened.
๐Ÿ‘‡
In 1960-61, #pulses acreage in #Punjab was 9.03 lakh hectares with production of 7.09 lakh ton, but; in 2018-19 Kharif, it dropped to 7500 hectares with a production of 6200 tons
The per kg cost of pulse import increased from Rs 16.88 in 2006-07 to Rs 42.80 in 2016-17 (rise of 10%/year). If India were to continue to import large quantities of pulses, the unit cost of such imports is to increase for sure. Why not encourage Punjab farmers to grow pulses ?

Really excited to share our last paper about the importance of #groundwater discharge as driver of #methane emissions from #Arctic lakes published in @NatureComms !
nature.com/articles/s4146โ€ฆ
In this paper we sampled ten different lakes in the Abisko region to evaluate spatial and temporal patterns of groundwater discharge and implications in lake CH4 emissions (1/6) Image
A 222Rn mass balance revealed that groundwater discharge was an important water source for the lakes, with inflows comparable to those from inlet streams (2/6). Image

#Punjab had 2 resources, water & good soil.

The much famed #GreenRevolution messed it up.

With India facing water woes in the coming years, it is important to develop a granular understanding of the data we have on contamination. We analyzed district level contamination of groundwater sources and this is what we found.
#WaterQuality #GroundWater
This data needs to be viewed in the context of what we call "testing density" which is the number of sources of groundwater tested per square kilometer in each district. Some regions with high contamination ( like Kerala ) have high testing densities too
While this data is collected by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, the data comes from the various state governments. A high testing density may therefore be an important indicator of which states have more rigorous testing procedures and which don't.

Well. This looks like confirmation of the existence of a positive feedback loop that may make it even harder to prevent extreme sea level rise, and all the other #climatechange extremes.

Not surprised, but very concerned. (Thread) unenvironment.org/news-and-storiโ€ฆ
...the thing about this new Arctic study is, itโ€™s a clear example of how #climatechange can be worse than what weโ€™ve been told.

Most studies show it is likely to be worse, as we continue to do this puzzle- putting the complex pieces together, with an ever uglier result. 2/3
In my own area of research, it turns out that including #groundwater in coastal #flooding projections can drastically expand the amount of area affected.

Not just by emergent flooding, but by remobilizing soil pollution we capped decades ago but didnโ€™t line from below. 3/4

Though I am really glad that #arsenic contamination of #groundwater in India, and specially #WestBengal is getting the attention it deserves, there is a major issue that needs wider discussion.
There is a simplistic argument that arsenic naturally occurs in the #Gangetic belt, the author uses the term โ€œ#geological curseโ€. If this is the case, why is heavy #arsenic contamination being reported from #Jharkhand and #Chattisgarh in Central India?
A possible answer to that may be traced to this MIT paper that was published in @NatureGeosci on #anthropogenic influence on #groundwater #arsenic contamination in #Bangladesh nature.com/articles/ngeo6โ€ฆ
