#COVIDー19 crisis response is another area where the performance of Prime Minister #ImranKhan's cabinet is inadequate & late resulting in a rapid surge in #coronavirus cases+infections. His TV address was unimpressive. @ImranKhanPTI can learn from @realDonaldTrump & @NYGovCuomo.
Unlike #USA+#Europe, #Pakistan is right next door to two epicenters of #COVIDー19 spread: #China & #Iran. China was initially late but later took impressive steps to contain the spread, incl quarantining #Pakistani citizens. Unlike Iran where Pk citizens visited in large numbrs.
What steps did PM #ImranKhan take for a #CoronaFreePakistan when it was obvious #Pakistan faced #COVIDー19 spread threat from #Iran; & when it became obvious that almost every neighbor incl #Iraq+#Turkey+#Gulf traced 1st cases to Iran & when #Tehran failed to warn neighbors?

There are a lot inaccuracies in here: the reason for contract soldiering in the #Gulf #GCC is NOT building a force that is more dispensable, or willing to take up arms against citizens - the primary reason is lack of indigenous capacity

Staffing a military with just 300,000 nationals in #Qatar or 1,300,000 in the #UAE is impossible - plus the parallel militaries (Emiri Guard, Presidential Guard, National Guard) there to protect the state are always staffed with nationals NOT foreigners
The use of contracted mercenaries not integrated into the chain of command of the armed forces and not wearing uniform such as in the #UAE is a different story and very much an exception

[Thread on a thread] A lot of relevant questions listed by @jasmineelgamal, on which I would add few points :
1/ Beyond the decisions that are taken or not, the uncertainty created by #US messaging on #Syria before and now on #Iraq is making the work of US allies very complicated. Both military and civilian actions c/ #ISIS are paralized by uncertainty. Planning is simply impossible.
2/ Nobody wants #endlesswars and #America has to decide for itself its level of engagement in the #MiddeEast. The #US could be right to call for #burdensharing, esp. from #Gulf & #Europe, but the way it has been doing it makes it difficult for allies to answer operationally.

1/ Outside of core supporters, few in the #Arab world will shed tears over the death of Qassem Soleimani, who in their view went from a hero of resistance to Israel to mastermind of ethno-sectarian cleansing + decade-long campaign of weakening, isolating, butchering Sunni Muslims
2/Soleimani had emerged, in many people’s minds, as both the mastermind and symbol of Iran’s alleged hegemonic ambitions in the #Arab world and the leader of yet another foreign occupation force on Arab lands. #QassemSoleimani #Iran
3/ Seeing the Iranian Soleimani appear in Damascus, on the frontlines in #Syria, #Iraq, and at the heart of #Baghdad, was a constant reminder of the decline of not only Syrian and Iraqi regional influence and national sovereignty- but the defeat of #Arab nationalism itself

The last few days of #US military build up make a lot of sense now. The killing of #Iran Quds Force commander Suleimani cannot be overstated as an escalatory event, even if US will have intended it as ultimate show of force.
Suleimani was the most visible face of Iran’s fight against #IslamicState and US in the region. A huge loss of knowledge and expertise for IRGC and humiliating for #Khamenei after his tweet taunting #Trump. The question now must be what an Iranian response will be.
Iran can not afford not to respond to this level of attack, but does not necessarily have to respond immediately. They will understand how vulnerable Trump is going into the electoral period. US military and energy assets across #Iraq are at high risk of rocket and mortar attack.

I wrote about the various ways migrants assert their belonging to the #Gulf, despite the lack of legal means to obtain Gulf citizenship.

Migrants develop complex and creative strategies to navigate life in the Gulf — defying transience and establishing roots, homes or even claims of citizenship.
With a focus on #SaudiArabia Arabia, I looked at how generational migrants (or long-termers as @anaffissahely calls them) use religious imagery (seeking refuge near the Holy Mosque) or patriotic acts (donating blood to the armed services) as markers of belonging to the country.

Incoming #EU High Rep @JosepBorrellF’s first speech gave us a glimpse of #EUdiplomacy’s next 5 years. #EPhearings2019

His endorsement by the Parliament was never in doubt. Still, Borrell’s energetic speech went further than expected.

👇THREAD:

twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
2/ Borrell shared views with his trademark outspoken tone and all the famed sides of his character:

☞ The mature #EU integration enthusiast and former European Parliament President

☞ The responsible internationalist development buff

☞ The assertive Spanish foreign minister
3/ Borrell raised a shield in defence of the rule-based multilateral order, pointing to Ukraine as evidence of the dangers ahead if it keeps unraveling.

The sub-text: ‘I am not just talking about Moscow being unilateral, Mr Trump’.

The #Trump admin has totally skewered #Iran policy. Maximum pressure has lacked *any* substantive strategy or realistic end-game.

Now we lack allies & credibility.

#Iran's hardliners are laughing - they calculated they could hit #Saudi with a high probability of impunity.
Following #Iran's attack on @Saudi_Aramco, @stevenacook writes:

- "Events in the Persian Gulf have demonstrated to #Iran’s leaders that they can escalate with impunity... If #Trump does not respond militarily, the U.S. should just pack up and go home."

foreignpolicy.com/2019/09/17/thi…
@Saudi_Aramco @stevenacook Few if any people like the prospect of *any* military action, but just take stock of what took place the other day in #Saudi.

If the U.S. fails to respond here, we invite more malign acts.

As one colleague just said to me: it'd be *THE* inflection point for U.S in #MiddleEast.

The #UAE diplomacy with #NewDelhi is a step forward in helping end #India-#Iran strategic partnership. If successful, this will help #Pakistan interests that suffered due to Indian-Iranian partnership in #Afghanistan & #Balochistan. /1

@AQpk
The #UAE is likely hoping to permanently end #India's reliance on #Iran oil imports, and shift its oil contracts to Arab Gulf suppliers. #AbuDhabi is likely also interested in seeing India end its role in #Chabahar port, which has also created problems for #Pakistan and #China.
While helping #Pakistan economically & diplomatically (quiet diplomacy to bring the #US & #Islamabad closer), the #UAE has walked a fine balance to court #India in the hope of encouraging an #Indian shift away from #Iran.

Robust ties with #Qatar are part of #Pakistan's overall close strategic relationship with #Gulf/#GCC states. The internal Gulf crisis had little impact on #Islamabad's relations with Gulf states, and there's no juggling act, unlike the common perception. Ties are not zero-sum.
#Qatar's pledge to invest up to $22B in #Pakistan in coming years, on the heels of multibillion-dollar #KSA/#UAE/#Kuwait investments confirms #Gulf is of paramount economic/political/security importance for Pak, and #Islamabad is rightly involved in Gulf security arrangements.

#Pakistan informed #Iran at highest levels in the past few weeks that #Tehran needs to do as much to ease tensions as other parties should. For example, easing of #US sanctions should come with Iran reducing support to proxies in #Yemen/#Syria. #Iranian officials asked #Islamabad

One of the reasons of the retardation of Arabs and falling behind (and make them worthless in all worlds) is that they do not know a thing called (neutral evaluation) or (neutral description)
because Arabs, in general, exaggerate when they love and when they hate and they don’t know any moderation.
#Imam_Ali for he was the first Arab man to diagnose this dangerous disease of Arab nation by saying: Love your beloved one wisely as he might be your enemy one day.. and hate your enemy wisely as he might be your friend one day.

What a wonderful wisdom quote.

I watched the entire proceedings of #OICMakkahSummit for about 8 hrs, and live tweeted at @Office_AQPk interesting tidbits & observations. Here's some observations on PM #ImranKhan's speech. /1

#AhmedQuraishi @AQpk
PM #Pakistan #ImranKhan was well received at #OICMakkahSummit. #MBS, King of #Bahrain, Pres of #Iraq, PM #Bangladesh, informally interacted with him. #Saudi hosts opened doors at holy sites for only two leaders this time: President Al-Sisi of #Egypt & PM Khan of Pakistan. /2
PM #ImranKhan speech was among the long ones at #OICMakkahSummit. It was extempore. Many Muslim leaders didn't get to speak due to paucity of time. Immediately after PM's speech, Secretariat asked leaders to keep remarks short. PM's speech was among the well delivered speeches./3

Despite all the tough rhetoric, #Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, tells top political & military officials in a religious-type meeting an hour ago in #Tehran that #Iran does not want a war with #America.

Nothing surprising here. The ayatollahs long abandoned the slogan Great Satan for the #US and actively sought strong ties with #Washington under #Obama WH. In #Afghanistan & #Iraq, the #IRGC & Gen. Soleimani quietly cooperated with US military & intelligence, until recently.
In return, again under #Obama WH, the #US turned a blind eye as #Iran/#IRGC/#Hezbollah expanded influence from #Nigeria to #Malaysia, thru #Yemen/#Gulf, and hosted elements of #Taliban+#AlQaeda as guests inside Iran, but without allowing them to be operational.
