While not first sit-in of modern CRM, it triggered wave of direct action U.S. & founding of SNCC. 🧵#TeachTruth

[THREAD] Black and Native babies, as well as their mothers, experience worse health outcomes than their white counterparts in #NorthCarolina.

Here’s how @ncatsuaggies, the nation’s largest #HBCU, is making a difference.

#healthcare #BlackLivesMatter cardinalpine.com/story/ncs-bigg…
Encouraging more parents to breastfeed in the first few days and months of a child’s life can help enormously, with research showing there’s a lifetime of health benefits for both moms and babies.

#northcarolina cardinalpine.com/story/ncs-bigg…
But less than 2% of certified lactation consultants are Black even though research shows people respond best to health messages from those of similar backgrounds.

My name is Shawn Lassiter and I need your help. I’m running in a special election for congress in 22 days. Here is a thread about being black; about science, and about education. It’s long but it means a lot to me and why I'm running.

2/
I am a STEM Educator & I didn't see a Black STEM professional until 9th grade. Some people NEVER meet a Black person in a STEM role. That is why it’s so awesome @CollectivePAC and @314action are backing my run for Congress.

The final day of the anniversary of Black History. February is just the anniversary. Black History (World History) is 365 days/year. Many are historically illiterate - willingly or unwillingly. I’m grateful for my informal education in our history - at home as a child,

Astronaut, black belt, and saxophonist, Ronald E. McNair served as inspiration and patron to thousands of first-generation students. We'll be diving in on his history and his namesake TRIO postbaccalaureate program.

The story even inspired a children’s book, and decades later, the library is now named after him. /3 The cover of the children's book "Ron's Big Mission&quo

#DNRTulane is rocking my timeline.

Real talk, as a residency APD, I debated whether I should comment. I don’t have these problems in my current role, so maybe I should stay quiet.

But I read the entire court doc and cried. Cuz as a Black woman in academia, I am Dr. Dennar.
This could easily be me, at any point in my career, and I would want someone to speak up for me. If we’re being honest, there’s things I’m not ready to talk about in my career that already HAVE happened before I came to Nebraska, and I had no one to speak up for me.
So yea, I’m speaking up and saying that what we are seeing with #DNRTulane is structural racism in action. What we are seeing is silencing of #BlackWomeninMedicine and #HBCU discrimination. Do not look away. This is happening. All. The. Time. Everywhere.

Thanks to all of yall for tuning in. And as always, thank you to @AlexWitt for having me. I had to talk fast and say a lot in a short time. So let's recap what I was trying to say:
The insurrection was a violent reaction from people who believe that the election should be determined solely by the candidate who won the majority of the white vote.
That's what it boils down to. Not economic anxiety. Not the idea that Biden Democrats will expand government.
This is not new: Dems have not won the white vote in a presidential contest since JFK in 1960.

What IS new is the elevation and rewarding of voices who are willing to say the racist, xenophobic stuff out loud. Hawley. Cruz. State legislators. Trump. And all their enablers.

@KamalaHarris will never be “brown enough” for you

...and she doesn’t have to be. A thread (1/10)
Imagine bringing home a Black man named Donald Harris as your boyfriend.
Imagine bringing home a biracial woman named Kamala Harris as your girlfriend.

Let’s not pretend these meetings would go well in many of our families. We can’t just selectively accept Black folks. (2/10)
Knowing our communities, Harris likely experienced some anti-Blackness from other South Asians growing up. Sharing this, if true, could show vulnerability and authenticity. (3/10)

Canceled HBCU homecomings deeply rooted in community and culture leave a void theathletic.com/1945691/2020/0…
We go hard, especially during Homecoming, because HBCU’s represent the four years in our lives in which we weren’t the minority, an affinity group, an ERG, or an afterthought. HBCU’s; It’s Black sacred ground.
It’s a family reunion, a block party, a cookout, a kickback, a fashion show, a festival, a black power rally, a revival, an oasis, a physical, and spiritual baptism in Blackness. #ifyouknowyouknow

Here are just a few reasons why all #blackpeople #Blacktwitter #BlackLivesMatter should #GoogleAndrewYang

1) #FreedomDivided of 1K/mo for all US adults. Could help build black wealth quickly. 3 fam adults living together = $3K/Mo buy a 200K house in 5.5 years #YangGang
2) On top of the #FreedomDividend, he also recognizes the historical injustices done to us through slavery and supports the exploratory bill in Congress to figure out reparations logistics. #Yang2020

3) Our boy @AndrewYang also wants massive criminal justice reform. Every cop gets a camera and turning it off is assumption of guilt, no private prisons, decrim of weed and opiates, and mass pardoning for those in jail for nonviolent drug charges. #GoogleAndrewYang #YangGang

1. In part 2 of our latest meme series, we’re taking a closer look at #gerrymandering’s effects on our communities. Let's get into it!

A thread...
2. #RacialGerrymandering is manipulating district lines in a way that dilutes the voting power of Black folk – a method of #VoterSuppression.
3. Let’s use the same ex. from Pt. 1 to look at gerrymandering tactics used to suppress Black votes. 'Cracking' is breaking a voting bloc into multiple districts to keep them from being a majority anywhere, ensuring they have little to no representation.

Great thread. Parts of it I agree with, others make me concerned.

Let’s unpack.
Clearly, the point of the discussion offers an opportunity to widen the tech pipeline; to ensure accomplished black CS HBCU students get their foot in the door. Critical. Essential.
However, it also offers a question that @peterme brought up: so, is Stanford then just an expensive trade school?

The Black ⛪️ Church

One of the oldest institutions opposed to #whitesupremacy.

In celebration of #BHM #BlackHistoryMonth, we pay homage to “The Black Ark”, to our teva ark in Hebrew (תבה) — The Black Church.

History of the Black Church in America

The Black Church was our ark in ⛈ weather, our refuge before any dove could be released!
After slavery was abolished, segregationist attitudes in both the North and the South discouraged and even prevented African Americans from worshiping in the same churches as whites.
