Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has just delivered his address to #HRC46, slamming @UNHumanRights report and urging countries to vote down any resolution on Sri Lanka. Excerpts below.
'[OHCHR] has published a report on Sri Lanka, accompanied by an unprecedented propaganda campaign on that report. Sri Lankan heroic armed forces militarily neutralised the LTTE in 2009 after 3 decades of conflict.' Dinesh Gunawardena #HRC46 #lka
'The Sri Lankan government acted in self defence to safeguard the unitary state, sovereignty and territorial integrity from the world’s most ruthless separatist terrorist organisation.' Dinesh Gunawardena #HRC46 #lka

Very pleased that this resolution has been adopted. The Commission is still vitally needed to ensure accountability for human rights violations in #SouthSudan - including the killing of Christopher Allen and 9 other journalists during the civil war. #HRC43
Watch: Christopher Allen's cousin @jeremybliss's powerful intervention at #HRC43 in March.
Also, my #HRC43 intervention on behalf of @RSF_inter, on the urgent need to end impunity for the killings of journalists in South Sudan, including Christopher Allen:

Update: 54 African countries introduced draft resolution at the UN Human Rights Council mandating the establishment of international independent investigation into police killings and repression of protests. This is huge deal! #BlackLivesMattters #HRC43
The draft resolution mandates the creation of an independent international commission of inquiry to investigate systemic racism and abuses against Black people in the United States and other parts of the world. Image
The draft resolution also mandates the commission of inquiry to examine the federal, state and local government responses to peaceful protests, including the alleged use of excessive force against protesters, bystanders and journalists. Image

.@jeremybliss also spoke at #HRC43 on UN and individual states' failings in the case of his cousin, journalist Christopher Allen, who was killed in South Sudan in August 2017. Two and a half years on, there has still been no investigation and no justice. webtv.un.org/watch/id-commi…

@ILGAWORLD @UNHumanRights "Yes...but you need to talk to everyone," say the apologists.

False. The UNHRC's own rules (Res. 60/251) say the opposite.

Art. 8: "When electing members states... take into account the contribution of candidates to the promotion and protection of human rights..."
@ILGAWORLD @UNHumanRights Diplomats say abusers are meant to be on the Council.

FACT-CHECK: False.

Art. 8: "The General Assembly by a two-thirds majority may suspend the rights of membership in the Council of a member that commits gross and systematic violations of human rights."
