Back in 2019, we finished an UG project creating a timeline of #HVDC projects 🌎🌍🌏 and also added the what was then the newly proposed πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ‡¬ #suncable project.

This just looked at one aspect (the most technically challenging of all ⁉️) the undersea cable.

I also wrote a (very short) article for the #VSC #HVDC newsletter that @OfficialUoM Prof. Mike Barnes was editing on the news coming out of Australia

Here are some figures that might help put the #suncable project in context.

*These are from 2020 when the project was the Australia - Singapore Power Link (ASPL) and part of Yihong Li's UG thesis @eetunsw

ZBF release finally draws closer (zero2050usa.com). We have been working to get the data/report out & understandable. Here is a short thread with some interesting observations that we made. First, here is a cheat sheet for our scenarios (a wide spread of possibilities)
First, we find that scenarios have huge amounts of #wind & #solar. We also find that deployment rates for these (& #storage) must dramatically increase to reach our goals (with and without novel generation).
This becomes increasingly important for limited technology cases & huge for #storage in terms of energy capacity.

@NREL just dropped a new draft of its missing grid modernization study.
- Seams returns >2 years after Trump appointees squelched it
- 2 months after @INVW exposed their meddling
- And 1 month after @HouseScience told @SecBrouillette to #FreeSeams.
THREAD
theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
The #FreeSeams study projected that building a national power grid would cut costs + carbon by killing off coal and boosting wind & solar. The new @NREL Seams ordered by @Energy Dept politicos adds scenarios that "dilute" those findings. 2/7
nrel.gov/analysis/seams…
@NREL Seams' new DOE-approved scenarios assume:
- higher costs for power line construction
- lower fossil fuel prices, or
- limited retirement of coal generating stations

Each of those factors make long-distance power transmission look less cost-effective. 3/7

OK, most of the following is textbook stuff on #HVDC but just a quick reference for what a "low-voltage metallic return" - the faulty part of #Basslink - is used.
Basslink is a monopolar HVDC system and the original design was based on an earth return. This is quite typical of monopolar #HVDC systems as it reduces cost (requires only one cable) and losses (again because of one cable)

ptd.siemens.de/IEE_HVDC_0306.…
The reasons #Basslink was eventually designed with a metallic return were mostly environmental (see link above) to avoid

"- Corrosion of long metallic structures
- Electrolysis effects of sea electrodes
- Electric and magnetic field effects"

Reminder: While U.S. is arresting adults and abusing kids from Central America, China is pledging to invest $38 Billion to rebuild SA power grid, incl new #solar, #wind generation - goo.gl/uTx2VV #climatechange
Money quote: "We can install a (transmission line) that can send (#solar and #wind power) where it needs to go. We could even send it all the way to the U.S." goo.gl/uTx2VV - #renewables
Ironically, this was precisely the strategy of "Connect the Americas 2022" program launched by Secy State @HillaryClinton under @BarackObama in 2012 - goo.gl/A9htzY - #climatechange #RenewableEnergy

To extend your analogy, the key difference between retail goods and electricity is that electricity can move at the speed of light as long as there is a wire to move it on. 1/
What Euro (and now Chinese) power mkts are doing is using UHV #transmission lines to move surplus power to mkts with excess demand. This benefits #renewables which are not dispatchable also uses more capacity of baseload plants. /2
As @ABBgroupnews and @Siemens will tell you, the power loss w/ HVDC #transmission > 2,000 mi is very low and can easily tranverse water boundaries, which is why it's being used for offshore wind and across North Sea. /3
