Today’s Friday sermon in #HagiaSophia—with choice of Quranic verses, sword display, #Erdogan reciting of Quean, and covering of “Christian symbols” —was the official inaguration of the Islamic State of #Turkey.
This will not end here; expect the worst to come.
They did not even bother to choose verses of the Quran that advocate peace and harmony, but the sermon in #HagiaSophiaMosque was full of verses on the “infidels”
Funny how Erdogan and his fan base detest Arab nationalism. “ We all one Muslim Ummah,” they say.
But Turkish nationalism is apparently halal!

JUST IN: #Turkey's President @RTErdogan called his #Russia/n counterpart #Putin couple of hours ago. #Kremlin reports the two:
- praised military cooperation in #Syria (#Idlib & NE)

- endorsed ceasefire in #Libya

- discussed bilaterals + #Ankara's #HagiaSofia decision (!!) Image
Things to watch:
1. Something apparently cooked up on #Libya:
Minutes after #Russia-#Turkey talks, #Algeria Prez called #Putin to talk LYB:
- stressed need for immediate ceasefire
- return to intra-Libyan dialogue based upon Berlin conference
- "consolidate international efforts"
2. According to Kremlin, Putin told Erdogan that his #HagiaSophiaMosque decision stirred public backlash in #Russia. Erdogan reportedly promised that "visitors' access to Hagia Sophia will be maintained, and Christian legacy there will be preserved." (!!)

Thread: 1/ There's an intra-left debate going on with regards to the future of liberalism. Some of the best voices on this are @ZaidJilani @shadihamid and @zackbeauchamp - and its part of the reason why I am finding myself in favor of the reclassification of #HagiaSophiaMosque
2/ #HagiaSophiaMosque was built in AD 537 as a Byzantine Empire cathedral, was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral by Crusaders in 1204, converted back in 1261, converted a mosque in 1453 by the Ottomans, and secularized to a museum in 1935 by Ataturk.
3/ Let's not pretend, as @ClaireBerlinski is surely about to reprimand me, that Erdrogan did this out of concern for the Ummah or Islam. For that matter, none of the previous conquerors likely had spiritual motives paramount.
