THREAD: Now that it's a week since #Hamiltonfilm came out -- can I just say that after watching it three times and digging into it -- that it is perhaps one of the most overrated Broadway musicals of all time.

Before we dive into the ahistorical elements, quality wise, it's a 7.
So the "good things": The performances by its supporting cast and ensemble is strong. The cast can sing, dance, and their costumes are appealing.

The energy and enthusiasm is there, but the concept is where things go South. Many have spoken on this, but watching it stung.
If Lin understands the origins of hip-hop, there is no way he could have thought this was ok. As a non-Black person of color, he completely drops the ball here.

Conflating Black music with an American Dream narrative that is rooted in slavery is not just wrong, but fucked up.

So - I watched #HamiltonFilm - and I’ve never seen the stage play and.. I loved it. Understand all the critiques now but...it’s fabulous theater. And it’s fun. And moving. I cried. So that’s it. That’s my hot take.
Yes, we are now in a different world. But I think about the audacity that created it. In 2015, it was about making old systems more inclusive. And It tried. Now it’s about dismantling those systems because maybe they can never be inclusive and equitable.
But seeing that amazing talent and creativity and joy on stage made my pandemic sore heart sing and dance.

1/ I've been off Twitter for most of the day, and dipping back in, I'm struck by what a strange, fascinating, revealing, and timely July Fourth weekend we're having.

There was the Rushmore rant, with a warped version of history being used as a political weapon.
2/ There's the start of #HamiltonFilm streaming, and the many ways that it encourages people to ponder, rethink, and wrestle with history, what it is, how it changes, how we explore it, who is recognized and included within it, and why it matters.
3/ And there's the actual reason for the weekend & the person at the center of it -- Thomas Jefferson -- who is having a historical reckoning of his own bound up with race and rights and inclusion and exclusion and the meaning of American history -- with or without July Fourth.

Okay, so you've watched the #HamiltonFilm, and want to celebrate #FourthofJuly by digging deeper into America's founding. Here are some recommendations for books that not only cover key themes and topics from the play, but are also very engaging and approachable. /1
First, there's an excellent collection of essays by historians on the play itself, including its many meanings and misreadings, edited by @TenuredRadical. I especially like @jlpasley's essay on the modern uses of federalists like Hamilton. /2 rutgersuniversitypress.org/historians_on_…
For the American Revolution in general, there are legions of books that provide solid overviews. My favorite is Alan Taylor's, which balances military, indigenous, political, and social sides of the era. It is a comprehensive continental history. /3 wwnorton.com/books/American…

One of the best indicators of future success is being able to read on grade level by 3rd grade.

One of the best programs to help kids from poor neighborhoods achieve this milestone is to provide a Pre-K program.

Wanna fight poverty? Close the achievement gap?

Pre-K is the way.
According to @SteveKlineberg at @RiceUniversity, a majority of Houstonians support *raising* taxes in order to make Pre-K available for every child in Houston.

They build prison cells based on how many kids can’t read on level by 3rd grade.

We should do this.
Simple calculus:

The best way to fight racial disparities is to fight poverty.

One of the keys in fighting poverty is education.

Pre-K is a long-term solution to solving a systemic issue.

Let’s make Pre-K a reality.

Few years back I had a shot at doing the @HamiltonMusical graphic novel. Sadly it never worked out. They tried to move ahead without using actor likenesses but decided that wasn’t the course to go. Still crazy having my work in front of Lin- Manuel Miranda.
Deadline was crazy tight for designing characters and doing sample pages. And I was also working on another gig. Wish I more time to do them right. @wastedwings did an amazing job coloring my rushes pages though.
Would of been a fun gig. Happy #HamiltonFilm day everyone!

#HamiltonFilm a thread. The first time I saw #Hamilton on stage at the #PublicTheater I knew absolutely nothing about what I was in for. My college classmate @leslieodomjr had told me briefly over the years that he was working on something with @Lin_Manuel that was unlike
Anything else that had ever been done. The stage is a resoivoir for overhyped products, so I didn’t quite know what to expect other than an explosion of talent based on the cast involved I already knew. The lights lowered, I put my playbill aside and at intermission turned to
My friends, also in the audience that night, @MarkRuffalo and his amazing wife Sunny and said what would become a familiar phrase out of my mouth from that point on, “Hamilton” is the most inspired piece of art I’ve ever seen.” Over the course of the next 2 years, I was blessed
