We love getting questions about mining, minerals and geology! We were asked about the historical #gypsum quarry which today is the beautiful Kempt Quarry Recreation Site in #WestHants.
Here's the story:

Gypsum quarrying began in #HantsCounty in the 1700s when farmers exported it as fertilizer. #Gypsum fixes alkaline (high pH) soil. US inventor Ben Franklin learned this from the French and brought the idea to the US in 1785.

There have been many #gypsum quarries in #Hants over the years, including several in the #KemptShore/Cheverie area.
There were two quarries near #Cheverie that operated in the 1900s, the Cove and Upper Head quarries. The Cove Quarry was close to the shipping pier.

The East Gore Slate Quarry in #EastHants likely started operating in the mid-1800s and operated into the early 1900s.
Here's the story of the quarry and how it's connected to Courthouse Hill and the Rawdon #gold mines!

The historical quarry is on turn-of-the-century geological maps but there are no official records of its production, so precise dates aren’t available.
A mill was built nearby to turns its slate into roof shingles.

Today there is a modern slate quarry directly across Slate Quarry Road from the historical quarry.
One of the many old buildings that used East Gore slate for its roof was the courthouse on what we now call Courthouse Hill, but which was once known as Judgement Hill.

Nova Scotia #salt saved lives this winter – all our road salt comes from the #Pugwash salt mine. With snowstorms now over (we hope!), here’s a history of salt mining in #NovaScotia!

327-342 million years ago, global sea levels rose and fell many times. This repeatedly flooded #NovaScotia with what we call the Windsor Sea. #NS was near the equator at the time so the sea also evaporated repeatedly in the heat.

The evaporation of sea water left deposits of successive layers of salt. This process was repeated for millions of years until the original salt beds were far below earth’s surface. Subterranean pressures and heat compressed the salt into #NovaScotia’s huge rock #salt deposits. Image

Former #mines and #quarries often become parks and protected areas. This thread shows some examples in #Halifax, #Dartmouth, #Shelbourne, #Truro, #LunenburgCounty and #KemptShore.

#KiwanisPark in #Truro was developed as a gravel pit in the 1930s to help build Route 2. Like a lot of former pits and #quarries, the site has filled with water and become a natural oasis in the heart of the town.

Former mines and quarries are often hidden in plain view! #PointPleasantPark contains 50+ former quarries. The stone was used to build walls and forts in the park. For example, slate from the #QuarryPond helped build the #MartelloTower.

#NovaScotia has dozens of #manganese occurrences and had a bunch of mines in the 1800s and early 1900s, mostly along the south shore of the #BayofFundy.

For example, the Tennycape #manganese deposit (#HantsCounty, #NovaScotia) was discovered in 1861 and manganese was extracted from boulders overlying the bedrock in 1862.

The actual Tennycape Mine opened in 1882 and became the largest official #manganese producer in #NovaScotia, with an estimated 4000 tons of ore reportedly extracted between 1880-1900.
