Onam celebrates the homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali. Mahabali, despite being a demon king, was said to be generous and benevolent. His rule is likened to the golden era. Because of this, his return every year is so widely celebrated. Image
It is said that Mahabali defeated the gods and took over the three worlds. This made gods resent him and urge Lord Vishnu to help them in their fight against the demon king. Mahabali was a devotee of Lord Vishnu and the god found it difficult to take sides in the battle.
Vishnu, in his Vamana (poor Brahmin) avatar, visited Mahabali. He made the king agree to his wish. Vamana asked for property rights over a piece of land that measures "three paces". Mahabali agreed to this wish.

The Vamana avatar then grew in size and covered everything the

Some incidents from Vamana Charitam on this auspicious occasion.
Vamana's Trivikrama expansion is not a one-time leela. Vishnu is always present as Trivikrama. Vedam says Treeni pada vi chakarame vishnur gopaa adaa aabhya:
Vedas predate Vamana avatar. Or, Vamana is Veda personified.
Treeni pada can mean here three worlds, three syllables of Aum, three states of consciousness, etc. Basically, it is a more subtle, Vedantic understanding of the Leela of placing three steps.

#Happy_Onam: The Myths and the Truth

Ever since I came to Kerala in January 1995, I have been told, Onam is celebration of Mahabali, fondly called Maveli by Malayalees. It is my 26th Onam in Kerala and the Leftist distortion of Onam has gone to the levels of...

online hooliganism against anyone celebrating or wishing Vamana Jayanti.

Go to any social media platform and check how "motivated" Malayalees attack anyone wishing Vamana Jayanti like a pack of rabid wolves...

They say, "Onam is not about Vamana. It is about Dravidian King Mahabali and how Brahminical Vishnu cheated him because of jealousy." It is not very strange that over 60% of these online wolves are from minority communities, the rest being Marxists.

The Thiruvatruvay (Thiruvalla) copper plates of Chera king Sthanu Ravi (9th Century) details out the Annadhana given during Onam festival. Thiruvalla is a famous Vishnu shrine sung by Azhwars. This is one of the earliest references of the Onam festival celebrated in Kerala
The Vattezhuthu inscription goes like this

“In the 17th Regnal year of Sri Ko Sthanu Ravi...
the Thiruvatruvay Sabha and Adikalmar unanimously wrap up Avani Onam feast arrangements with the land donated by certain Punchappatakarathu Chenthan Sankaran”

A clear proof that the Onam festival is celebrated in Vishnu shrines. #HappyOnam (Pic Courtesy- VVS FB)

#HappyOnam to all Malayalis around the world ❤️

Another #Onam is here, and like every year, so is a fresh round of heated debate about what the festival represents. For the benefit of the larger audience, let's unpack the mythology of this harvest festival of Kerala.

Thread.
Unlike most other festivals in India, Onam is not about the victory of "good over evil". It is a celebration of an Asura King by the name of Mahabali, or Maveli as Keralites endearingly call him, who was banished to Patala by Lord Vishnu, coming back home to visit his people.
The story goes like this: Maveli was an ideal ruler whose time was marked with prosperity, justice & fraternity among the masses. The Devas who were jealous of Maveli's popularity complained to Lord Vishnu, who took the form of a Brahmin dwarf named Vamana to defeat King Maveli.
