Robert Louis Stevenson’s #shortstory “The Bottle Imp” was first published (in English) #OTD, 8 Feb 1891, in the New York Herald. It was originally published in #Samoan translation as “O le Fagu Aitu” in the missionary magazine O le sulu Samoa (The Samoan Torch)

Interesting for all sorts of reasons—a #Hawaiian protagonist, a strong female character—“The Bottle Imp” is wonderfully elegant, & moves like a Swiss watch. It also contains a paradox, which arguably undermines Rational Choice Theory in #economics

Stevenson’s “The Bottle Imp” has inspired a number of spinoffs, from the 2016 opera THE DEVIL INSIDE, by @stuart_macrae & @louisewelsh00

The new #SAT report is out.

- Every racial group had a large participation decline
- Every racial group had a composite SAT score rise, except Hispanics (who are categorized as a separate racial group) & those who did not respond on race
- Natives rose 24 points
- Asians rose 23 Image
Men dropped their #SAT participation 30%; their composite score rose 13 points.

Women dropped their participation 32%; their composite score rose 6 points. ImageImage
Here are the graphs for racial averages on the verbal portion of the SAT and the mathematics portion. These are raw scores, in the sense that there are no corrections for reforms that change the points scale. ImageImage

Excited to share our recent work (& last chapter of my PhD) in #ISMEJ on #Symbiodiniaceae functional diversity, niche partitioning & isotopes in #corals across a rapid light-attenuation gradient (a thread..) @GatesCoralLab @himb_soest @uhmanoa @DonahueLab go.nature.com/2N1FDSm
@GatesCoralLab @himb_soest @uhmanoa @DonahueLab Corals depend on their symbionts (Symbiodiniaceae) for food, but #heterotrophy is also important--especially during periods of stress and low autotrophy (low light). But these symbionts show differences in autotrophic capacity and some (#Durusidinium spp.) may be opportunistic.
@GatesCoralLab @himb_soest @uhmanoa @DonahueLab Isotopes are a great way to understand nutrition and trophic ecology in ALL living things. We used isotopes and physiology metrics to understand how a single Hawaiian coral species (Montipora capitata) dominated by 2 different symbiont species were balancing auto- & heterotrophy.

I'm Yelling from Canada

CAN YOU HEAR ME?

Something REALLY Hinky is going on in your legislature

capitol.hawaii.gov/session2019/Co…

🚨It was adopted despite opposition from 16 Orgs; including @ACLU, @CommonCause @IndivisibleHI AND testimony of a HI Attorney General

Possibly this AG? 👇
Situation in #HI so disturbs me that I'm writing this thread on a Friday Night!

Here's Legiscan pg showing #SCR131

Note Action: One Day Notice 04-01-19

No amt of searching HI legislative pages provided a def'n of what this means

My guess - it goes to Senate for vote Apr 1

About 1/3 of you guessed right: #AmericanEnglish has about 14 vowel sounds. Here's a chart with 15 vowels (from #ucla) with examples and their #phonetic symbols (#ipa). The IPA is useful but controversial since there are euro-centric biases in its representation.
#vowels are cool since the range of them is huge. Some languages, like #hawaiian have 3, while #xoo has 31.

Usually, the less sounds in a language, the more complex the tone or word structure and the reverse.

Check out info on your language's sounds: phoible.org!
CORRECTION: #hawaiian has 5 vowels. Oops. However, many other #languages have 3 vowel systems, like #cheyenne
