As anyone who works on #COIs and #MotivatedBias can tell you, this arrangement is ethically unacceptable from an #OccupationalHealth perspective. HCPs paid directly by the league are in NO conceivable sense "independent."

And giving team physicians the "ultimate say" is absolutely the last thing you would do if you truly understood COIs as exposures and #MotivatedBias as a population health harm. It is literally inconceivable that this arrangement continues apace.

Remember a week or so back when I talked about the deep connections between the #railroadindustry and contemporary public health policy? This is one of them. The RR industry pioneered the model of having company physicians care for injured workers.

Thank you so much to our incredible panelists from last night’s MPX & COVID town hall @bruce_y_lee @jaywwalker @DrKYSR and @Oneris for the informative & engaging information! Your knowledge, experiences & compassion were greatly appreciated. (1/6)
Some things we learned were: MPX passes through close physical contact, from infected objects, and large respiratory droplets. MPX can infect anyone, no one is more vulnerable than anyone else. (2/6)
Public health crises highlight and exacerbate already existing inequities regarding race, class, & sexual & gender orientation. From there, stigmas are borne. Schools play a critical role in dispelling these myths & stigmas. (3/6)

How can we build community-controlled health infrastructure that is safe, free and accessible to all? 🏥 🗣 Get your radical imagination going at: bit.ly/resistandbuild 🔥🌱🛠

#ResistAndBuild #HealthJustice @CJAOurPower @MoveGen @NewEconomics Image
COVID-19 has made it clearer than ever that the current health care infrastructure is racist, classist, ableist, and criminally inadequate. Frontline communities have a longstanding history of resisting this system by building community-controlled alternatives in its place. ImageImageImageImage
(3/4) Alternatives where frontline, BIPOC communities receive the quality care they need. Alternatives where disabled, chronically ill, and immuno-compromised folks are not disposable, but whose lives are centered and held sacred. ImageImageImageImage

New in @Health_Affairs: “Public Health Emergency Reform Is Coming—These Six Principles Should Guide It.”
bit.ly/3rTJQKF Thread 👇
In a legislative session in which some on the far right are seeking to strip executive emergency powers, I’ve crafted a balanced approach to reforming #PublicHealth statutes in light of concerns about overreach without unduly hindering swift responses & nimble adjustments.
Even if you feel public health orders went too far in 2020, there are other infectious disease threats on the horizon that could pose different (e.g., disproportionately killing/injuring children) &/or greater risks (e.g., w/ higher transmissibility or mortality).

"At my school today we saw no masks, no shields, 1 thermometer used for random check when entering, we didn’t get materials until 11am and we got 1 tiny hand sanitizer the size of a mechanical pencil for 2-4 people per room" 1/2 @MOREcaucusUFT @UFT @nysut
"When I kept bringing it up, I was told that they had it. And that our UFT person would confirm today. We still didn’t see the items. And my UFT person also said that only the principal should call the hotline" 2/2

The union has a moral imperative to protect its members and make sure their working conditions are safe. If a pandemic and botched response is not a reason to strike, ... #healthjustice
then we will never have a better more valid reason to exercise our collective power as a union to demand improvements to our working conditions. Nothing else will compare. #healthjustice

Corruptus incredibils. We need to be #remote we need flexibility and we need options for outdoor learning. But before all that delay the opening and hit pause !
Cancel all state tests. Grant waivers for this year again. This is not business as usual. #red4ednyc #healthjustice #nycschoolsdeserve
No each school wont be able to do the same thing. We have been screaming at the top of our lungs about inequities for decades already. But outdoor learning, field trips, service projects all should be on the table in @NYCSchools

Teachers are trying to get guaranteed safe working conditions for themselves and safe learning conditions for your kids. Join the fight. #red4ednyc #nycschoolsdeserve #healthjustice
Teachers are not trying to get paid to sit at home. If your kid doesn't log on we cannot teach live. That is why we made videos, slideshows, and handouts. Your kid cannot sit tethered to a laptop the whole day. We need to be realistic about the amount and pace of work.
Teachers had literally 3 days training. Vacations were cancelled we worked straight through. The powers that be are weaponizing parents and kids against teachers and are gaslighting us all. This is literally about our very lives.

#MedTwitter has been discussing “Take Two Aspirin + Call Me By My Pronouns,” an op-ed claiming social justice is taking time from sci ed + decreasing the quality of #MedEd.

So here’s my take:
“Take Two Aspirin + Read a Curriculum”
THREAD.

#MedTwitter #SoMeDocs #DoubleDocs
As always, I start threads with my POV: #LatinasInMedicine #DoubleDocs student in year 2 of #medschool. I have interests in both #MedEd + #HealthJustice. I am about to finish my term as diversity rep on our med student govt. I care a lot about advocacy.
Let’s take a moment to learn about the author: Stanley Goldfarb is a nephrologist, *former* assoc dean of curriculum at UPenn Med. He graduated from med school in 1969. Ffolks who studied at UPenn have brought up negative experiences with Dr. Goldfarb.
