🧵Pet peeve: 'everyone should weigh the risks of #vaccines vs #COVID for themselves'. I have 2 issues here. #scicomm #healthliteracy #healthcomms #publichealth 1/4
First, you can weigh incorrectly or correctly. If I weighed the Earth, compared it to the Moon, and ended up determining that to me, personally, the Moon outweighed the Earth, I would not be right. 2/4
Second, the term 'themselves'. Risk calculation should include not just my risk for severe #COVID outcomes, but also the risk I pose to others while unknowingly carrying the virus. Why? If other's wellbeing as a reason is not compelling enough ('their problem'), then 3/4

#TodayICried, Day 3 of 7

Grady Wards

Me: "How are you feeling?"
You: "Terrible."
Me: "Terrible?"
You: "Terrible."
Me: "The medicines aren't taking the edge off?"
You: "It helped a little bit, but now I feel sick to my stomach. My bowels are loose, too."

Your voice is quiet and defeated. This is different. . . and it scares me.

Me: "We put you back on what you were getting at home and--"
You: "I know that. Soon as you said that yesterday I started. But now all I feel is sick and queasy in the stomach."

Me: "I'm sorry. . . what do you mean by 'as soon as I said that?'”
You: "What?"
Me: "The medicines. You said you started as soon as I said something? That part confused me. Just wanted to get clear."

You reach under the bed and pull out a plastic Kroger bag full of pills.

@ePatientDave @HealthHats @DrDannySands @lizsalmi @tessajlrichards @BMJPatientEd So much truth - IMO this flip to consumerism WITHOUT full participation of both clinical experts and patient community leaders in creating health literacy resources for humans is root cause of much "I did my own research" nonsense now driving medical misinformation online.
@ePatientDave @HealthHats @DrDannySands @lizsalmi @tessajlrichards @BMJPatientEd What I mean by that is "the academy" (in this instance the @AmerMedicalAssn who I give fish-eye to on the regular over their K St lobbying in service of status quo in US healthcare spend, but I digress) has missed eleventy-million-and-five opportunities to ... /2
@ePatientDave @HealthHats @DrDannySands @lizsalmi @tessajlrichards @BMJPatientEd @AmerMedicalAssn Team up with patient community leaders savvy in comms, community organizing, and *science* to build health literacy resources that can be deployed all over ever'where to help humans be prepared to made decisions about their/their families' health. /3

Low vaccination rates are a #publichealth crisis, leading to outbreaks of deadly diseases like #measles. My new research in Vaccine/@ElsevierNews provides insight into the characteristics of people who post #antivax content on #Facebook:…
First, I want to credit my fantastic co-authors: @MTH_Pitt @emfelter @DrToddWo @ChadTRM @PittPubHealth. This research stemmed from thousands of #antivax comments on a video on the @kidspluspgh Facebook page:…
We used social network, quantitative, and qualitative analyses to examine 25% of people who left these comments. Our goal was to answer questions about who these people are, the information they post, and how they are connected.
