𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣. You’re headed in what feels like the right direction, but you’re not in the driver’s seat. You check your belongings to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything—chances are, you probably have.

1. Peer reviewing is an essential research skill. And as with any skill it takes tuition, time, practice, respect and accountability to get right. The more you do it the better you’ll be.

2. Peer reviewing doesn’t just benefit the person who’s work you’re checking. The more research proposals and publications you review the better your research will become.

I recently gave a talk with @svyantek for @AccessCompUW, and the topic of what "advice" I had for disabled people navigating accommodations in #HigherEd came up again and again over the following weeks as I attended other talks and workshops in our conference high season. 🧵

Looking over all the access measure at #DisGaze22 and imagining what it would be like to apply for a conference and just not need to request accommodations, because meaningful access measures were already planned, by design, into the conference from it's outset. 1/3
There are many many moments where I feel like I cannot safely stay in academia. The rampant ableism makes me feel distanced in so, so many spaces. But scholars like @jaivirdi and conferences like #DisGaze22 give me hope. 2/3
Maybe colleagues can plan for me to be here. Maybe it doesn't have to be me performing access labor every single moment I engage with the academy. Maybe we can normalize best practices by just listening and following models set by disabled scholars. 3/3 #AcademicChatter

Over a year ago, @YouTube changed its ToS and began showing ads on #HigherEd videos.

That means two things.

1. Smaller schools can't opt out. To opt out, one needs 1,000 subscribers and 40K hours watched.

So small schools get ads on their "why you should choose X school"
2. It seems like the school is making money off of kids and families watching videos on why attend.

I know they are not. You know they are not, but not everyone knows they are not.

Making money on an admitted student day video? How small that seems.

A lot of us aren’t taught to write at all. And if we are taught it’s to write to a formula for a specific journal. We don’t often get taught basic writing skills, or learn from those whose job it is to communicate with clarity. Reading widely helps, too.
All of us have strengths with how we communicate our research. That might be in how we write and different styles (theoretical, chatty, persuasive, pragmatic). Or in using other ways to share messages including visual and audio options and co-writing with colleagues

No one should be surprised when PhDs leave academe due to lack of jobs. Over past decade non-casual academic positions have grown by ~900 per year (excl. 2018), HDR completions by ~9,600 per year. Some disciplines haven't grown at all for teaching staff #phdchat #highered (1/n) ImageImage
Public data does not show RO positions by discipline (ROs have grown by ~3,300 to ~19,000 from 2010 to 2020). Adding RO and "no info" staff and apportioning them to each field according to teaching staff improves the situation somewhat, but not by much (2/n) ImageImageImage
Public data does not show casuals by discipline (grown by ~2,500 to 13,500 from 2010 to 2020), but these (like ROs) are insecure. Apart from retirements & other separations, very few new positions, particularly in low rank. Main exception is Health (IT had a bumper 2020) (3/n) Image

Did you know PhD students often struggle with self-efficacy and accurately assessing their self-worth?

I've been reading a lot in this area recently.

"Imposter syndrome" is a catchy phrase, but it doesn't completely capture the struggle. There can be far more sinister questions than "Do I belong here?"

Questions like, "Am I worthy?" or "Am I capable?"
Some scholars (Lambie & Vacarro, 2011; Sverdlik, 2019) contend that doctoral students often feel a greater sense of self-efficacy when they achieve desired goals, such as publishing an academic article or presenting at a conference.

But what if those opportunities are elusive?

My own crisis happened during my PhD. It was gradual, but at some point I realised academic science wasn't driven by truth, quality, or collectivism, but ego, opportunism, and exploitation. I couldn't believe it. It seemed so wrong and unfair.

I've been been told my 'problem' is I 'care about doing good science'. But I refuse to give in.

Working WITH disabled people - as an educator, a medical professional, etc. - does not mean you understand the needs of disabled people. I'm really tired of people substituting proximity for lived experience. They're not the same. 1/5
Disabled people may agree with you, may thank you, they might give you good feedback, they might say they loved working with you. And all of those comments might be false. Because there is a power dynamic here. 2/5
If you're in control of someone's access, health, and accommodations, you're in control of their quality of life. Disabled people know that if they say something negative, or disagree, or refuse to pander, they might be framed as noncompliant or denied the care they need. 3/5

The movement for school "transparency" (aka, teacher surveillance) notched TWO victories in FL this wk.

One bill mandates public websites to search all books/instructional materials used in K-12 schools.

The other does the same for public #highered.

The K-12 bill (HB1467) mandates public websites to search all books and instructional materials used in schools -- meaning: anything & everything students might see: textbooks, reading lists, manipulatives, electronic media, learning laboratories... wtsp.com/article/news/p…
But the higher ed bill (SB7044) is similar! Others have focused on how it threatens tenure & accreditation.

3/5 Likewise, #DisabilityStudies has a habit of dismissing non-academics. I'm writing an op-ed about this because the irony is fascinating/frustrating. How can you advocate for emancipatory, participatory, research while dismissing 95% of disabled people for not being 'experts'?

This approach from unis is exploitative. If students and staff need training it should be from those who’re experienced and skilled. Whose time and expertise should be appropriately compensated. It mirrors other uni extractive practices. That ironically worsen mental distress.

If you have a radio show, a TV show, a podcast, I am BEGGING you -- please cover this story. Less than one week after accepting a judgment against them in MY lawsuit over first amendment rights, @collincollege fired a beloved professor for exercising his First Amendment rights.
it seems to me that @collincollege leadership is part of a criminal enterprise. Professors' public critiques have raised the possibility of scrutiny, and the college is obviously trying to chill the speech of faculty lest malfeasance and/or misdeeds be fully exposed.

1. Students themselves are electing to go virtual in my classes. They are just doing it. And that's fine by me. My classes are, at present, in-person and asynchronous online.
2. A common myth in pandemic pedagogy is that online synchronous learning is better than asynchronous online learning. We don't have to reinvent the wheel here. #RhetComp has already done studies on the benefits of asynchronous online learning.
