2. It is blessed with this outer gopuram which is a unique offering in a Hoysala temple like this. It now houses the broken vigrahÄs.
3. The elephants outside the outer gopuram reminds one of the earlier Madhukeshwara temple at Banavasi. Right in front is the house of the pradhÄna arÄaka of the temple. Their family is here for at least 400 years.

Two laterite stone Nandis and two stone elephants placed at the corners, facing each cardinal directions. Inside the temple, there is a small, but beautiful Nandi carved in black granite. The garbhgriha is in the form of a rock-cut cave carved out of a massive laterite block.

If only I could erase the hammer marks of the Islamic marauders and replace the amputated arms, the broken noses and hacked breasts of all the Murtis that they destroyed.
If only I could see our temples minus the modern day encroachments and misguided attempts to āredevelopā - the RCC roofs, the ugly steel railings, the naked bulbs and cobwebbed wires hanging everywhere, random nails and tube lights stuck on centuries old stone.
