» In Polarized #Texas, Rare Agreement: #Hispanic Mother, Melissa Lucio, Should Not Be Executed - The New York Times…
Lucio’s case has brought Democratic and Republican lawmakers together in mutual outcry.

Scores of legislators have called for clemency or at least a reprieve, including those who are ordinarily vigorous backers of the death penalty.
Lucio struggled to provide for her large family. At the time of Mariah’s death, she was pregnant with twins and already had 12 children.

She had part-time work as a home health aide, her lawyers said, but struggled with drug addiction and often relied on soup kitchens for food.

@kdurquiza is not alone. We're a growing movement and have already had the enormous honor and privilege to sponsor multiple #HonestObit -- obituaries that call out politicians for the needless death of loved ones.
@itsmefi wrote this #HonestObit for her mom, "Isabelle was a giant, powerful in her kindness. Like thousands of others...she should still be alive today. Her undeserving death is due to the carelessness of politicians who undervalue healthcare workers..."…
The Rangel family from the Rio Grande Valley wrote for their father, "The family blames his death on the deliberate neglect of the #Hispanic community by @realDonaldTrump and @GregAbbott_TX" #Texas #COVID19…

US construction is male & white; leading to systemic & intergenerational siphoning of contracts, social relationships & $$$$

Diversity & anti-racist policies need to implemented in bidding & contractors
Existing efforts at Municipal, State, & Federal seek to do ALL the things: gender equity & racial equity --->

Dear #poverty scholars, it is time for a reckoning. It is long overdue. #Discrimination, #structuralinequality & the lived experiences of the poor is not a tangent, it is core to "mainstream" poverty scholarship.
@nyuwagner L. Mead’s @springerpub Society paper "Poverty & Culture" perpetuates inaccuracies, ideologies & power imbalances that distract productive discourse & policy innovation. This treatise insults poverty scholarship; no matter political leaning. (see more from @lennan77)
It needs to stop. Stop blaming the poor. Stop assuming that history & context do not matter. Stop unfounded explanations such as “culture.” Stop ignoring the developmental needs of children & the nurturing of families.

As poverty & social policy scholars, what can we do?

So a black 12 year old playing with a toy gun gets mowed down by police in a park in seconds no questions asked, but a white guy and his wife point a military rifle and a gun at folks walking down the street you get to threaten them?
How many black and brown folk can sit on their porch pointing guns at passersby without swat coming in and taking them out?

Especially now as we fight the #pandemic is not the time to make sweeping, detrimental policy changes. Yet the Alexander-Walden-Pallone plan for out-of-network bills AKA “#surprisebills” is being considered. The proposal is deeply flawed. Here’s why:

Others say flawed plan is NOT the remedy for this important issue.

“This policy would likely lead to physician shortages & even facility closures in many vulnerable & underserved communities, just as these critical providers are desperately needed.” 2/x
“IDR is a proven solution and has worked at the state level in NY & other states. NY’s experience shows that an IDR process can work to the benefit of patients while lowering overall costs.“ - Nat Coalition on Healthcare, represents >100 mil Americans 3/x

"As of Monday, Hispanic and Latino residents made up 54% of all COVID-19 hospitalizations in the Prince William Health District, or 144 of the 269 hospitalizations reported, even though they make up only 26% of the area’s total population."…
“In Prince William, our Spanish-speaking populations are less likely to be able to effectively social distance, as many have to continue working during this time or live in more crowded conditions”.…
We've got to look out for all members of the 1st District. We can't forget about our brothers and sisters in the Latino community. This campaign is about ensuring the Hispanic and Latino members of Virginia's 1st District are heard.

While watching President Trump deliver #SOTU, and as I started to feel the groundswell of pride in our great Country, a poem by T.S. Eliot came to mind.

To be more precise, the poem came to mind while watching the shameful behavior of the #DemocraticParty leadership and members of the #CongressionalBlackCaucus.

The poem came to mind while watching Rep. Luis Gutierrez .@RepGutierrez, Democrat representing 4th District of Illinois and member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus walk out of #SOTU.
