This may be a spicy homeschool take, but here it is.

I am very concerned about the growing "unschooling" movement in the homeschool community.

This is ađŸ§” that I may add to throughout the day while I think about it. 1/

I DO understand that there is, likely, a wide variety of unschooling families. Generally, I hear unschooling families use the terms: child-led/interest-led, real-life,& application.

Maybe I will break down my thoughts by those terms. 2/
1. Child-led/interest led

Children don't know what they don't know. This is why they need fathers & mothers. Thousands of years of history, scientific discoveries, cultures, wars, & civilizations are unknown to children. They need to be led. 2/

Professionals! Wondering about the proposed home education register and what education should look like at home? One tip, it can be nothing like school and yet highly effective. Here are a few starting points. #homeeducation #selfdirectededucation #evidenceinformededucation
School's Out - I talk to leading researchers on education without school. We think dropping out of school is a disaster - is that really the case? What if we changed the narrative? thepsychologist.bps.org.uk/volume-33/marc

Many young people at home make choices about their learning - this is self-directed education and is evidence-informed. Here's Peter Gray explaining the necessary conditions for self-directed education shown in his research.

A short(ish) thread on the bizarreness of the current "Covid fears driving rise in home education" narrative:
#FairHearing4HomeEd #HomeEdNotVulnerable #EHE #HomeEducation #HomeEd
Firstly, the suggestion seems to be that C19 is not a valid reason to home educate. It is perfectly valid, and entirely reasonable. Many people are concerned about transmission in schools & the effect on their kids & wider family. And these concerns are not being fully addressed.
Is it any wonder, then, that people are voting with their feet? These are not irrational parents who can’t be arsed to send their kids to school, but caring, conscientious parents trying to do what’s best for their family. They are not parents to be worried about.

A quick point-by-point on this. Why are we worried about parents not sending their children to school? If they are good enough parents, we should be happy, surely? And if they are not, then surely your concerns should have been noted before they left school.
Parents who are deregistering to home-ed are enacting their responsibility to provide an education, not exercising a right. If we don't have the ability to educate otherwise than at a school, the state has the responsibility for provision.
A "home schooling register" is a complete non-sequitur, given that we don't use the term 'home schooling' for elective home education here in the UK, indeed @educationgovuk issued a blog stating that 'home schooling' is the term for remote schooling-from-home due to closures.

In the #HomeEducation inquiry meeting yesterday, @JennyColesDCS from @ADCStweets asked why parents would not register their children as home ed. I’d like to answer this, from my own viewpoint (can’t speak for other HEors, obv, but I doubt I’m alone in my feelings on this). 1/n
Firstly, let me turn the question around. Why *would* I want to register my HE child? There are no upsides for us, no support or advice being offered. But the potential downsides are serious, more intrusion & interference. Why would I welcome this? 2/n
Then there are the negative connotations and associations regarding “being on a register”. Registers are for those who are a risk to society, not those legally exercising a lifestyle choice. 3/n

THREAD: So much wrong with this pre-paywall it's not worth reading. Cheryl doesn't #homeschool & doesn't mis-term #homeeducation #homeed (which is not 'excusing' from school, it's the default).
thetimes.co.uk/article/lockdo

Last month we polled our most recently-joined members on their school vs. #homeed intentions post-lockdown. School lost the popular vote by a wide margin with only 8% definitely returning thier children.

Our membership has increased by nearly 600 since March. We have admission criteria and rules that prohibit the use of #homeschooling misterminology, which means we decline requests from those who believe we support the replicatation of schooling at home.
