An hour past the “deadline”. This looks to be the final stand—entrance to #PolyU. Intermittent chants by remaining protestors & heckling@police. No idea what’s going on inside campus. But there are ppl who wanna leave but are trapped & afraid to try. #HongKongProtests #HongKong
Water cannon, TG deployed 5-10mins ago, and more TG now as protestors start hurling petrol bombs towards the Chatham Rd intersection. Protestor line holding. #HongKong #HongKongProtesters
Protestor being treated and helped into campus. The frontline has grown 200-300, w/ppl ferrying supplies in and out of campus. Another line guarding Science Museum Rd. #HongKong #PolyU #HongKongProtesters

That was one of the craziest things I’ve ever seen. At PolyU now. This is after an armored vehicle made a charge for the protesters on the bridge only to get engulfed in flames after petrol bombs were thrown. It reversed, while on fire, as police fired teargas. #HongKongProtest
It’s 4am. A group of journalists have set up camp in a room at PolyU, watching the live-streams. Downstairs, protesters continue clashing with police as they have for 19 hours. Outside, Yau Tsim Mong District seems to be in chaos. Many journos have left, fearing their safety.
Police attacked campus. Fire on the bridge and at the main entrance.
Explosions heard on bridge from Molotovs. I’ve seen a couple protesters sobbing hysterically in fear. Protesters trying to put entrance fire out.

#NOW #PolyUniversity - @hkpoliceforce urges protesters to surrender or they will arrest them by force including LETHAL FORCE. Police warns protesters "Time is running out" as they have been tolerated by the society for long. #HongKongProstests #HongKong #HongKongPolice
Meanwhile on telegram channel, #PolyU protesters vow to defend the campus until the very end - probably the last university stronghold - because they think it'll be almost impossible to reenter the campus if they retreat, which makes it harder to block cross harbour tunnel again.
#BREAKING #PolyU: @hkpoliceforce's armored trucks approached protesters and burning objects. One of them was then set ablaze by Molotov cocktails thrown by protesters. Literally frightening though it shall be put off very soon after it retreated. #HongKongProtests #HongKong

Can we talk about #POWER instead of "violence," please? #Violence is a broad label that gets thrown around in the #HongKongprotest context, and it's basically meaningless.
When people say they can't condone violence, what I hear them say is: "I condone powerful systems of #oppression and #institutionalviolence, and protesters taking a small bit of power back into their own hands makes me uncomfortable."
People who are uncomfortable with protesters fighting strong power with weak power need to examine their priorities.

The Trolls Are Back: My latest story w @asebenius looks at new research showing how social media attacks on Hong Kong’s protesters have persevered despite take downs bloomberg.com/news/articles/… via @bpolitics @pelstrom @dantenkate
Out of around 30,000 accounts that tweeted about the protests, about a third were created since August says @AstroscreenHQ and @donara_barojan
They follow a pattern: less than 10 followers, uses a generic photo to disguise identity, tweet primarily about protests, use generic hashtags like #hongkongprotest to avoid detection. Many posts now appear in English in apparent bid to sway global opinion, says @donara_barojan

Every Voice Matters - a #HongKongProtest art thread

We take a look at some #MeiWithHongKong artwork, and explore the influences of gaming on our protest art, as well as the movement itself. 1/18
HK mvmt’s newest icon is a scientist called Mei from Xi’an who shoots w/ her ice guns. When Blizzard punished gamer @blitzchung for supporting HK in an after-match interview, netizens decided in all their chaotic goodness to co-opt Mei into a revolutionary protest figure. 2/18
The internet turned Mei into a HKer. She douses out tg. She's an ☂️ in hand, shield at her hips, & sensibly wears a gas mask. And she shouts the words that got @blitzchung banned, the words that hv become HKer's rallying cry - 'Liberate HK, Revolution of our times!’ 3/18

1/ I want to tell a story about me and violence.
It was back to July 21, I was dragging my body back home at midnight after a long day of protest. I lay in my bed, Priscilla was asleep, and I scroll on my phone in the dark. My newsfeed was swarmed with footages..
#HongKongProtest
2/ featuring thugs who held metal rods and hit train passengers indiscriminately at a train station. These hired thugs, later confirmed as gangs connected to pro-Beijing lawmaker and the Chinese liaison office of Hong Kong. They were beating people under the watch of the police..
3/ some were escorted personally by riot police to their safe haven.

I barely slept that night, adrenaline in my body kept me awake. My mind kept rehearsing how would I defend the passengers if I was on the train. The next day, terror has occupied the atmosphere of Hong Kong.

6 days ago I made a Instagram post in support of freedom for Hong Kong. This is a 7 year old art that I've posted many times without issue. The only difference is this time I made the post in support of Hong Kong fighting for freedom against the oppressive Chinese government.
The next day, my post was removed for "hate speech". This isn't Instagram's fault. The Chinese government paid attackers to mass report me, thus triggering the algorithm to automatically remove my post. I appealed the removal and my art was restored.
However, ever since that day, I've been shadowbanned as well and I'm still shadowbanned. No doubt due to the same abuse of report button by the paid attackers. The Chinese government have figure out a way to censor and control free speech even outside of their country.

#HongKongers really don't give a damn whether there is @hkpoliceforce's "permission" to march, you can't silence the voices by suppression. This is Hong Kong, not in mainland China.
