My paper for @housingevidence is out today, on why even 300,000 houses per year offers no solution to the #HousingCrisis

A thread on supply and prices - more to follow later on home ownership and affordability.
2. Policymakers are in almost unanimous agreement on what's behind the housing crisis: as @mhclg said in 2017 "the cause is very simple: for too long we haven't build enough homes." But this doesn't fit the evidence.
3. Supply has in fact been sufficient to put downward pressure on house prices, but that effect has been outweighed by much larger forces pushing in the opposite direction. Here's why...

At the @cityofsydney we want you, the people who live, work & visit Sydney, to help us shape the city’s future: that’s what #SustainableSydney2050 is about. I’m at Town Hall with about 500 people to further the plan today, part of 18months of consultation on our city, our future.
As Lord Mayor @CloverMoore just said, we don’t want to just react. We want to lead. We want our community to be prepared & resilient to face a changing world.

Our cities can be engines for Inclusion & sustainability, but business-as-usual won’t get us there. #ourcityourfuture
But we *do* need to recognise our enormous privilege & out-sized impact. Megan Flynn from @Earthwatch_Aus tells us, in most of the world, July 29 is the day we “use up” our sustainable allocation of natural resources.

In Australia, that date is March 31. #ourcityourfuture

May I inject a note of hope into Polly Toynbee’s untrammeled gloom? Many people of all political colours are moved into action now by distress of individuals and families who are suffering under the cosh of lawful oppression and unrestrained discrimination theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Psychologists have written about people being overcome by feelings of humiliation or shame, fear or distrust, insecurity or loneliness, or by a sense of being trapped and powerless under the abuses of power by the state.
George Lakoff, in his book The Political Mind, calls for “empathy, responsibility and courage” in standing up to such abuses. There is plenty of all that in #Tottenham , and I guess in all the UK.

We are calling on people to join us on the streets on #March9th to demand, yet again, meaningful action on the housing crisis. The government could begin by implementing the demands of the motion overwhelmingly supported by the Dail last October. #HomesForAll #Right2Housing
#March9th will be just one of a number of regional demonstrations over the coming months which will culminate in a national demonstration in Dublin on May 11th. #HousingCrisis #HomesForAll
#Homeless figures released by Dept for Jan show 9,987 people as officially homeless. This is a drop in the ocean compared to the true number of people impacted by #homelessness.

#HousingCrisis impacts everyone from students, Travellers, workers, families, migrants & children.

A technical, but important thread which demonstrates why UK housing law is SCREWED. #homelessness #HousingCrisis #HousingForAll
1. The main provisions on homelessness are contained in Part VII of the Housing Act 1996. The Act includes, among other things, principal criteria for determining which duties a local authority will owe to a homeless applicant, and how a decision can be challenged.
2. At present, under the specific guidelines set out in Part VII of the Housing Act 1996, many tenants who are served a Section 21 'notice' are being urged by their local council to remain; for if they leave, they are bizarrely classified as 'intentionally homeless'.

1. It’s been a long time since affordable housing dominated a municipal election. But that is exactly what happened when mayoral challenger Jennifer Keesmaat took on John Tory for Toronto’s top job last October. #TOpoli #HousingCrisis
2. She ambitiously promised to create 100,000 new affordable rental units in 10 years, while the incumbent pledged to create a more modest but still impressive 40,000 new affordable rental units in 12 years.
3. The Mayor’s signature Open Door program launched in 2015 has never met the council-approved target of building 1,000 new affordable rental units per year. If Housing Now’s future success is predicated on the results of the Open Door program..

This week in MN, we’re expecting -60 wind chills. In this life-threatening frigid cold weather, my heart aches knowing there are people living in cars, under bridges, and if lucky, couch hopping.

Our homelessness crisis is not a crisis of scarcity, but a crisis of moral clarity.
Our homeless crisis is America’s dirty little secret.

This year we’ll spend around 700 Billion on the military. With an investment of up to 20 billion we could house every homeless person in the US.
In the richest country in the world there’s no reason we can’t guarantee the right to affordable quality housing to everyone in the U.S.

And in 116th Congress, this should be a top priority!

Gardaí shut down the street in front of government buildings to block #RaiseTheRoof demonstrators today, as a motion calling for rent regulation, investment in public housing and a referendum on the right to a home was debated. Thousands packed the streets nearby instead.
Thousands turn out for the #RaiseTheRoof rally, from Dublin's Lord Mayor to people in Direct Provision, demanding solutions to Ireland's housing crisis. Many spoke of facing homelessness themselves, or said they were there because they knew a family affected. #HousingCrisis
Maya (22) came from Galway for #RaiseTheRoof with a family friend, who took her in after being told her baby would be put in care if she couldn't get housing. Maya said she is homeless nearly 2 years now and had to quit college, living in hostels or on couches with her daughter.
