1/ This new coalition featuring We 💚 Seattle, has a brand new website (registered Jan 16th) and a national ad campaign. They're also pushing for policies that are both harmful & outdated.
2/ This new coalition features #SafeSeattleIsAHateGroup and Jonathan Choe's employer, Discovery Institute.

They are anti-all drugs including marijuana and take a stance that is similar to prohibitionists of decades past, such as the failed DARE program.

3/ The coalition's assertions about the root causes of homelessness being severe mental health & drug abuse are just plain wrong.

Kein Amt zaubert eine Wohnung her.

Shelter is a human necessity and a human right. The decision to turn housing into the major speculative asset class for retain investors and Wall Street has made housing a disaster for people *with* houses - and a catastrophe for those without. 1/ A row of barred prison cells; superimposed over them, in nee

America has a terrible, accelerating homelessness problem. Many of us share this problem - obviously, people without houses have the worst of it. But no one benefits from mass homelessness - it is a stain on the human soul to live among people who are unsheltered. 3/

Hey! I'm a #FamilyPhysician and I personally know at least 10 other mid-career Family MD's in Ottawa who have left comprehensive (cradle-grave) family medicine recently... I have thoughts on this.
#MedTwitter #Health @OntarioCollege #LifeWithoutADoctor
ottawacitizen.com/news/sutcliffe…
First off - it takes years to train a Family MD. There are SO many reasons why we aren't training enough of them. But before you talk recruitment you need retention. My colleagues haven't left Ottawa - they still doctor, they just don't do comprehensive family medicine anymore!
They work in all sorts of specialized areas of medicine / focused-practice like long-term care, in hospitals, in ERs, in palliative care, sexual health, psychotherapy, urgent care, sports med, walk-in clinics - you name it! but not in comprehensive Family Medicine. Why?!!!

.@vosdscott was talking about #homelessness about 35 minutes into the VOSD podcast from a few days ago. I've spent some time thinking through what he & @andy_keatts were talking about.
I read about/ hear most people reducing #unhoused people to abstractions and dismissing what is obvious about living #homeless: the stress of not having your own residence makes you kind of crazy. It's natural.
People with means and a few rungs up on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs are blind to where the homeless are. thoughtco.com/maslows-hierar…

Here we go, follow @michaelgove taking questions from @luhc committee, right now!
Watch here!
parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/23…

First question from Clive Betts: What does levelling up mean?

Gove says -
Making opportunities more equal across the country.
continues....We hope to publish a white paper before Xmas some metrics on how the Government can be judged.

Betts asks - Your department is being tasked with levelling up, can it achieve it?

Gove - Levelling up can only succeed with different solutions in different places.
Betts - What mechanisms will you put in place so relevant departments work together?

Gove - Has to be done in a cabinet committee.

(I would agree with this BUT it depends on what information is passed on to SPADs and whether ministers grasp that in terms of other depts)

📑 NEW. The first independent evaluation finds that Scotland's #HousingFirst Pathfinder has been highly effective at supporting people with multiple and complex needs to sustain their tenancies. @ScotHousingNews scottishhousingnews.com/article/opinio…
Some tenants described the effects on their lives as transformational. They explained that the relationality, stickability, flexibility and longevity of Housing First support set it apart from other services they had used in the past.
The findings indicate that Housing First can be successfully scaled up, and relatively quickly so, even in areas where housing supply is constrained. The process has not been easy, however, with many difficulties encountered and lessons learned across all five areas.

A thread by BRD for your consideration:

Today is #ArmedForcesDay- too often a day where politicians offer platitudes about sacrifice and gratitude while they continue to send our troops to kill and die in endless wars for profit and power- not justice or freedom. #NoMoreWar /1
They praise us at their events while they gut our healthcare and sidestep accountability for the rampant sexual assault, pollution and abuses on and around our bases. #ArmedForcesDay2021 #MilitaryMeToo #EnvironmentalJustice #AuditThePentagon 2/

As we grapple with LA's failure to house its people, we want to reaffirm a commitment to equity and fairness in our approach. @CamnerLeonora wrote about why it is important for the #yimby movement to center WHERE to put housing and for WHOM:

abundanthousingla.org/a-yimby-moveme…
Abundant Housing LA is building the pro-housing movement for LA. But it’s not enough to just be supportive of housing in general. Achieving housing abundance requires thoughtful approaches that center equity, racial justice, and environmentalism.

abundanthousingla.org/policyagenda/
Abundant Housing is committed to critically reexamining our approach to housing, our past positions, and direction in the context of equity and racial justice.

Frank & I started sharing dereliction in Cork City last June
We really didn’t think that over 8 months later we'd still be posting
It's reached 300 today

Here’s thread busting 10 myths about dereliction
& report adobe.ly/3sYYGQ1
#economy #wellbeing #ireland #RestPlayWork 10 myths of dereliction in ireland
“Dereliction is not a function of poverty but a function of wealth. Because only the truly wealthy landlord can afford to sit on the asset”
@davidmcw

#dereliction #ireland #RestPlayWork #10myths
#economy #wellbeing #profit myth 1 there is no profit in dereliction. Busted.
Owners of a derelict building have 2 options
1 Sell – it’s a booming housing market
2 Renovate – there are 7 funds available depending on your circumstances & rents have doubled

There is really no excuse for leaving a building derelict for years

Early this morning, we passed the #AmericanRescuePlan.

It's critically needed and the Senate must act now to get these resources into our economy to help struggling families and businesses, accelerate vaccine roll-out and safely reopen our schools.

A few important things:
1/ The single biggest line item in the bill is for direct, $1400 checks to people earning $75,000 or less ($150,000 for couples). $1400 per earner and each of their dependents.
2/ (If you earn more than these levels the amount of the payment scales down to zero at $100K/$200K), to ensure this is targeted to the neediest.)

Moderator @mshannabrooks kicking off our #HousingVoterForum @seattleu tonight, where we’ll talk about the role of #housing & #homelessness in our City Council election. Follow along on @tech4housing YouTube channel.
.@mshannabrooks says she’s attended 30+ candidate endorsement meetings thus election season, & she observes a lot of candidates know the language to use to talk about #homelessness, but not necessarily what it means.
For example, says @mshannabrooks, everyone talks about #HousingFirst; but when you ask their policy, some have said they want FEMA-style tents. [For the record, tents aren’t housing.]

.@CityofSanDiego Needs to adopt a Housing First strategy with homeless persons instead of forcing people to solve all their problems while living on the streets. The cities criminalization first strategy is directly contrary to CA legislative findings and policy objectives. 1/
@CityofSanDiego "People experiencing chronic homelessness are trapped in a cycle of homelessness and trauma. Traditional approaches attempt to address people’s trauma first and use housing as a reward for complying with treatment; such approaches fail" - 2/
@CityofSanDiego Such approaches fail because people cannot improve physically or psychologically while actively experiencing the trauma of homelessness. Cities justify the status quo as only fiscally responsible option. Instead, this approach among the most expensive and least effective. 3/

With SF Prop C next week, lots of talk re: concerns
that ppl who are homeless will move to SF to receive services if SF spends more $ on services. As a homelessness
researcher, wanted to add what research (here & elsewhere) says about this
1/9
Worth noting that this is a common concern. bit.ly/2Av8N6N bit.ly/2Gs1dL8 bit.ly/2P6jEvH (I travel country
speaking about homelessness & every city thinks that ppl come from other
cities to them) 2/9
The vast majority of ppl who are homeless have lived there before becoming homeless.
True everywhere, even though myth of movement persists. Some migration, but no clear patterns. 3/9

Over 200 people joined us for our annual conference in June, considering what we need to do to get Scotland's transition to #HousingFirst right. So what did people tell us?
Well ... #HousingFirst needs houses and the Scottish Government is critical in making sure our national plans to build more homes are directly informed by #rapidrehousing. And locally, more homes need to be allocated to homeless households, particularly those with multiple needs
And what about delivering #HousingFirst support that meets the core principles? A consideration of local authority commissioning approaches is an important step to ensure support is open-ended, flexible and assets-based.
