.@marcthiessen writes CRT “teaches that Whites are the oppressors,” casting me as a critical race theorist. In #HowToBeAnAntiracist, I don’t say all Whites are racist oppressors. Actually, I challenge those who do. What's dangerous is misinformation. 1/

I write about in #HowToBeAnAntiracist that we should recognize "ordinary White people as the frequent victimizers of people of color and the frequent victims of racist power." 2/
This quote comes from a chapter called “White," which explains why we should not position all White people “as an oppressor class” and all people of color as an “oppressed class,” as Thiessen and Princeton professor Allen C. Guelzo claim CRT and I do. 3/

Restating the title for accuracy: Candace Owens dismantles Candace Owens’s flawed anti-racist rhetoric. Yet again someone is describing my work in a way I reject and attacking their own flawed description. 1/7

"What he is alleging is that unless you are anti, which he defines as meaning, you are aggressively, constantly attacking it, then somehow you become it. So if you are not aggressively everyday waking up and looking and seeing racism everywhere, then you're a racist." 2/7
That’s actually not what I’m saying or even alleging, and I oppose this rhetoric. This flawed rhetoric defines racist as a fixed category, as who a person is, or becomes. 3/7

In 2018, as the symbolic 400th birthday of Black America approached in 2019, I reflected on a way to commemorate this historic occasion. I had finished treatment for metastatic cancer. Though my emotional and physical wounds hadn’t healed, I had a new lease on life. 1/10
An idea for a new type of history dawned on me, and I’ll never forget sharing the idea with @agent_ayesha --and later with @OneWorldLit editor, @cjaxone, in his office after discussing the final edits on #HowToBeAnAntiracist. 2/10
Why not a community write a history of a community? 3/10

Bryan Loritts cites Ibram Kendi / #HowToBeAnAntiracist @ a CCCU talk:

"This is core curriculum, not as it relates to how I get into the kingdom, but it is a significant indicator light that I know the kingdom has gotten into me...A racially indifferent Christian is an oxymoron."
"Gomer is being sex trafficked. She's incarcerated...to emancipate the one who cheated on him cost [Hosea] everything...If you say you're serious about diversity but your institution is not making costly moves that do violence to the cultural norms, you ain't loving."

What we say about the races, what we do about injustice determines what—not who—we are in each moment. But to determine what we are, we must define what racist and antiracist are in a clear and consistent way. #BeAntiracist 2/

After defining these terms, we can apply them to ourselves, to the ideas we express, to the policies we support, and to our action and inaction when staring in the face of inequities. #BeAntiracist 3/

Every night last week, I sat down w/ a leading author + a WNBA or NBA guest to discuss #WhatNow. After the portion for book sales, which went to the Black-owned bookstores, the proceeds from ticket sales are being donated to antiracist organizations, as I revealed each night. 1/7 Image
I want to thank everyone who purchased tickets. I want to acknowledge the generosity and commitment of all these busy authors and coaches, players, and executives from the WNBA and NBA who donated their time to support these organizations. 2/7

I am a full of thanks on this day, my 38th birthday. Two years ago, I didn’t know whether I’d see another birthday. I was dealing with stage 4 cancer, facing down a daylong cancer surgery with two different surgeons. 1/9
A year ago on my birthday, #HowToBeAnAntiracist dropped. I was excited as I was worried. 2/9
It is not easy to release a book where you are incredibly vulnerable and incredibly ashamed, a book debunking how many people understand racism,

You are #1. You have championed #AntiracistBaby. You have joined us on this journey of trying to raise the kids in our lives to be antiracist so they can one day join the power struggle for an antiracist world. Thank you. 🙏🏾 1/4 Image
And thank you for continuing to pick up #HowToBeAnAntiracist, which is #2 on the New York Times bestseller list—and #Stamped Jr. which is #1—and #StampedfromtheBeginning which remains on the list. 2/4 ImageImage
I’m thankful but most of all I’m thankful for those folks who are activating themselves, who are flinging themselves into antiracist activism. 🙏🏾 3/4

Can we officially do away with the phrase “implicit bias” in 2020? Please? Pretty please?

Can we FINALLY just call it what it is? It’s racism. Can’t we finally just say racism when we actually mean racism?

It’s sad that having this stance in academia makes me “radical” 🙄
Part of institutional racism is white supremacist power demanding that we don’t actually say the word “racism” when it’s what we’re actually talking about.

If hear me say the phrase “implicit bias” in person, know that I’m codeswitching/in performance mode 👀😂 #BlackintheIvory
Join me in telling these institutions NO. I will call this what it is. If you aren’t comfortable with me doing that, let’s sit down and talk about why.

I wanted to write a book that challenged people and writing #HowToBeAnAntiracist was unlike any challenge of my lifetime. I wanted to write a book that encouraged people to join the antiracist journey of transformation. Little did I know I’d be transformed in the process. 1/3
I feared writing #HowToBeAnAntiracist because the complex truth has historically been weaponized into simple lies to combat racial reality. But now I fear what happens if we don’t clarify the complicated truth. I fear what happens if we don’t resist. 2/3
History is calling us all. Thank you to everyone who is using #HowToBeAnAntiracist as one of your guides as you answer the call of history to radically transform yourself as we radically transform our society. This is the new cover of #HowToBeAnAntiracist. 3/3

Looking at the @nytimes bestseller lists this week, and I don’t know if it has ever had more books on racism. I’m heartened to join these incredible writers with 6 entries and 3 books, including #HowToBeAnAntiracist at #1 on the Hardcover Nonfiction list; 1/3 ImageImage
#StampedfromtheBeginning is #6 on Paperback Nonfiction list; and #Stamped co-authored with @JasonReynolds83 is #2 on YA Hardcover list.

The resistance is from the loudness of demonstrations to the quietness of reading and listening and learning. 2/3 ImageImage
I’m heartened Americans are turning to books to make sense of this moment; of the unspeakable murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd; of the antiracist movement. Thank you writers. Thank you readers. Thank you to the resistance. Keep reading. Keep resisting. 🙏🏾 3/3

I’ve been thinking a lot about @DrIbram’s words, spoken at UVM and written in #HowToBeAnAntiracist, and contemplating what it means for #vted schools and educators.
Specifically, @DrIbram asks us to look at the outcome or impacts of policies, not their intent. Policies are racist if they have outcomes that disproportionately impact one group over another. Are #vted schools and educators looking for disproportionality in data?
Data from 2015 shows that Black and Native American students were 2 to 3 times more likely to be suspended from school than white students in Vermont, a clear indicator of racist policies and practices in #vted schools: vtlegalaid.org/sites/default/…

There was a time when I didn’t want to write #HowToBeAnAntiracist. There was a time when I feared revealing my shame, and challenging prevailing racial thought. There was a time when I was not sure whether I’d be able to finish #HowToBeAnAntiracist. 1/ Image

sharing the book with the world on my birthday was a gift, seeing it debut at No. 2 on the New York Times Best Seller list was a gift, every person who read and recommended the book was a gift, 3/

I spent most of 2019 on mics, working on books, and building @AntiracismCtr. But I still managed to write essays @TheAtlantic. Here are my five most critical essays of 2019.

On climate change.
On my cancer.
On being an American.
On the new lynch mob.
On Black deprivation. 1/
@AntiracismCtr @TheAtlantic My essay on denial of climate change and racism resting "on the same foundation: the transformation of science into belief.” Meaning “all can believe and disbelieve all. . .Everyone lives as an expert on every subject. No experts live on any subject.” 2/

@AntiracismCtr @TheAtlantic The story of my grueling fight in 2018 to survive stage IV colon cancer and how writing #HowToBeAnAntiracist got me through. “Nothing else matters in those moments of creation, until creating brings me—and hopefully the reader—back to what matters.” 3/

Let’s be clear here, the education system is designed to reproduce racist outcomes. Therefore the system must be re-designed to produce anti-racist outcomes. Usually this means blowing it up and upsetting Those who historically have had power and privilege.
Of course there should be more funding in schools and, for all students, but if there truly is limited funding at least temporarily, it should go to under resourced communities. No excuses.
If it is truly a zero sum game, then some more needs to be coming to those who have had less.

Around this time last year, I was recovering from a 6-hour cancer surgery. The pain was chronic, but so too was my happiness that the surgery was successful. Apparently, when I was in the ICU directly after surgery, I kept waking up and asking my wife, Sadiqa, “How did it go?” 1/
I’d fall back asleep for five minutes only to wake up and ask the same question again and again. After the seventh time asking the same question, the anesthesia had worn off and it registered. 2/
My prognosis looked as bright as my daughter’s eyes who held my hands through the pain in the hospital and demanded to wear bandages when we got home in solidarity with Daddy. It all started looking up. 3/
