Friends: I'm at a professional conference this week. Hearing a report that when presenters use breakout rooms, people are leaving sessions en masse.

Shall we discuss?

So y'all have feelings about breakout rooms I see. Here are some of my key takeaways from this conversation:
#1 Perhaps we should build community and connection before sending people into breakouts. Sending people into a small room with strangers is awkward-sauce.

Talked to some teachers yesterday about how we can build asynchronous approaches into synchronous sessions. Curious if anyone is doing this or has any ideas?

Some context: many educators are being forced to offer sync sessions, but they recognize this is not ideal. So trying to help folks work within this constraint...also thinking about #ZoomFatigue for both teachers and students.
We talked about keeping the Zoom running and giving students an assignment in the middle of the sync session. Put up a slide that says "Writing Time" or "Reading Time" or whatever, and give them 30 minutes to go do that thing, but room is open if they want to chat.

Pre-class Zoom welcome slides can do so much to create welcoming spaces for our students!

#HowToZoom
I do have a plan to create some open welcome slides that y'all can borrow and modify for your classes. It's on the list.
I said no to a few things this week though so I'm learning

Okay. I guess we have to now talk about putting restrictions on students eating in Zoom classes.

#AcademicChatter #HigherEd #HowToZoom
Don't do that. Asking students to mute is fair. Making a dumb joke like "Did you bring me any?!" is fair. But asking hungry students not to eat in their own homes? Not so much.

And if you let them turn off their cameras, even better!
Would you rather someone sit there hungry (a huge distraction) or would you rather they eat their darn sandwich?

Okay but for real, teachable @zoom_us moment. I've been running webinars/sync classes for a long time, pre-Zoom, on a tool that shall remain nameless and that was very unreliable...

I used to get incredibly anxious before sessions that it would crap out. Like a wreck. And it never did, but then one day it did, and guess what, it was fine. We didn't have that class. I probably sent an email or posted in the LMS.

I've found @zoom_us to be reliable, but this will happen. It's nice to have a backup plan, but if it all falls apart, just keep trucking.

I can’t get past the paywall, but I think it’s safe to say that I disagree.
Also “free of distractions” is not an actual thing y’all.
Okay wait, I logged in to my free account and I can see it.

A thread on our upcoming workshop on facilitating live, online sessions (aka running a Zoom). @CleaMahoney and I are offering this through @OLCToday August 19-21.

I'm hearing about a lot of folks who are going to be leaning heavily on synchronous teaching elements this fall. Please support those educators by providing them quality #profdev on HOW to do this work.

Our workshop will not only model two styles of facilitation (informal and formal), but we'll also help you decide WHEN to use synch methods vs. asynch alternatives. Remember, synchronous is the ketchup; asynch is the burger.
