Dear colleagues in #cdnpse #onpse: some thoughts on the decimation of Laurentian University & what it means for the future of #highered. A thread, even with a few bad joke attempts.💔 1

The story: LU filed for creditor protection in Feb, via the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act—CCAA. Doing it this way bypasses annoying collective agreements.🤯 Decisions about massive restructuring are instead made by judges & a court-appointed monitor, here Ernst & Young. 2
The fallout: yesterday 110 faculty members terminated; 60 programs axed, mostly in Arts. But most PSE jobs are staff. The impact on Sudbury and the northern Ontario region is hard to calculate. LU provided essential services & training; it was a foundation of the local economy. 3

You know, I've been at Laurentian a while. I completed my Bachelor's degree there, my Master's degree there, and am now several years into my PhD. Why do I keep coming back, you might ask?

1. Convenience for students living in the north.
2. Thriving queer community.
3. FACULTY.
The first point is especially important when you consider how many students come from working class families and do not even quality for the necessary financial aid (OSAP, scholarships) to cover fees like residence at other schools. We need a university for local students.
LU, due in great part to amazing individuals like @DeanD_LU and groups like @PrideLaurentian and the Sexual and Gender Diversity Committee, boasts one of the most queer-friendly university campuses in Ontario. If we lose LU, we lose that support for queer students.

I've been thinking a lot about the situation unfolding at @LaurentianU and how the fall out will affect students like I once was: arts students, not from Northern Ontario, not there to study science or engineering or any similar program.

Coming from Toronto, I chose to attend a small school in the North because I wanted a different education experience. I wanted profs to know me by name, I wanted to be in small classes where we could focus on the content that resonated with those in the room.

There was (and still is) no other English Rhetoric and Media Studies program available in the province. The Communication Studies program was the perfect blend of theory and practical application.
