We had no rights at #Guantanamo. We had no power. We had nothing but our bodies and our lives and we had to use them to bring about change. Going on #hungerstrike is like entering a dark tunnel & the light at the end is death.

In the beginning, your stomach growls & begs for food. You dream of food. I dreamed of meals my father made after Ramadan--lamb mandi that melted in my mouth. I regretted every grain of rice left uneaten.

Days later, your stomach shuts down. Your body consumes your fat, then muscle. You feel pain in every cell consumed. You don’t sleep. You can’t concentrate and feel confused. Your vision blurs. Your heart beats so fast it’s hard to breathe.

The Gurkhas played an essential role in establishing the British Raj in India and fought for the British in Afghanistan, what was then Burma, Tibet and in countless other conflicts.

On my 4th (bit more challenging) day of hunger strike I would like to share why I am taking this stance and why I believe it is worth. It will necessarily be a long post but I will try and synthesise as much as I can.

#ClimateCrisis #ClimateAction #hungerstrike
1. Why #1: The strike symbolically represents the determination to make a little sacrifice for a greater good (reminiscent of the need of reconsidering the insane growth paradigm that is leading us to destroy the planet).
2. Why #2: In addition, it highlights the hunger and suffering that the planetary breakdown will bring about if we don't effect radical change. This is also an act of solidarity towards those activists who compromise themselves going to jail for a greater good.

Tonight marks 8 years since my father was beaten unconscious in front of my family and taken. 8 years he’s been in prison, severely tortured, for being a human rights defender. For wanting human rights and democracy. For wanting freedom and liberty #Bahrain #DKPol
Sitting on a train in #US, I read tweet after tweet frm my sister, how they took my father, how they beat him, & I mostly felt guilt. Guilt for not being there. Guilt for not protecting my family. As irrational as it is, guilt bcz I thought if I was there they wud take me instead
Today it feels more settled, but it’s the same pain, the same hurt, every day my father, and thousands others, sit in those prison cells, we feel guilt for not having been able to get them out, for being free while they continue to be imprisoned
