Ready for the #CFB Analytics Spring Top 40? Here we go. This Power Ranking is derived from a model which utilizes full Coach Staff efficiency metrics, roster talent, & returning production among other metrics. No opinion here, I just regurgitate the numbers. #NoOpinionJustNumbers
40 #Kentucky #BBN #SEC Power Rating: 61.726
Returning Production for the Wildcats may be a problem. At 39.72%, it puts them at 113th in the country. The schedule is manageable tho drawing Ole Miss & Miss State out the West. #CFB
39 #Washington #PurpleReign #Pac12
Power Rating: 62.271
Really like the new coaching staff in Seattle. Should put them in a better position to win. Roster talent purge from the prev regime will have an early effect (last 2 classes were 39th, 86th) but the ship has been righted.

This weekend @HuskerFBNation announced that they would wear helmet stickers to honor George Flippin, the team’s first Black player (1891-94, pic below is the ‘91 team)

It’s good to honor Flippin, but we should also take an honest look at what his time at Nebraska was like

🧵
Flippin was one of several Black athletes at PWIs in the late 19c, so he wasn’t unprecedented. But he was unusual.

Flippin’s appearances on the 1891 team earned positive press from Omaha (left) and Iowa’s student newspaper (right), which described him as the team’s best player
As for his style of play, these descriptions from Nebraska sources provide a nice glimpse. The game back then was more physical, as the forward pass wasn’t legal yet. Having someone who could shake off would-be tacklers and move the line forward was essential.

Psssh, I've been creating personal branding logos and more for the #Huskers for years.

For instance: take this microbrew I made for Shawn Eichorst. (*Rest in Power Big Eich!) Image
Or this original song I created for former Defensive Coordinator, John Papuchis:
Or this poster I made after Tanner Lee threw, like, 11 pick sixes in one season: Image

Nebraska leaves the Big Ten, signs a streaming deal with Amazon -- giving them access to the program a la 'Hard Knocks' -- and giving NU a direct & unprecedented pipeline to proper medical supplies and merch distribution (I have no idea how this actually works, so bear with me).
They show a fully televised scrimmage, a 7-on-7s contest, and a skills challenge on consecutive weekends that enable the team to showcase themselves and enable Amazon to have an "Adults Only", swear-words/drinking encouraged broadcast of a game against Iowa after a few weeks.
They also feature Scott Frost and Mario Verduzco going one-on-one in both chess and beer pong. Iowa gets a $2,000,000 check for participating and Nebraska makes bank.

Let's get weird tonight, #Nebrasketball. What've we got to lose?

I want Haanif jacking up 25 shots tonight.

I want Thor dropping behind the back dimes like he's on a VHS of 'And 1 Mixtapes'.

I want Hoiberg to get a tech because he coughs into his hand, then touches the ref.
I want Chuck Easley pulling up from the logo and turning around like it's going in, whether it goes in or not.

I want Ouedraogo to bring his birth certificate and hold it up to show everyone that somehow he's just 17.

I want Akol Arop to try to literally t-bag a dude on a dunk.
I want Cross hitting Indiana's post players with the dream shake, even if he travels his ass off.

I want Vedral scoring 6 pts off the bench and all of Nebraska melting down with pure joy.

I want Brant Banks dropping that giant man-ass into the paint like it's the stock market.

NEWS: Former #Huskers coach and current Youngstown State coach Bo Pelini is expected to replace Dave Aranda as #LSU's next defensive coordinator, sources tell @SInow.

Pelini's multi-year deal will pay him around $2M a year. He served as DC under Les Miles from 2005-07.
@SInow More specifics on Bo Pelini's deal with #LSU: three-year contract at $2.3M a year, sources tell @SInow.

Should put him inside the top 3 among assistant coach salaries.

Just six years ago, Pelini made $3.075M his final year at Nebraska - as head coach.

2018: Everything that happened before the season started.
AND
everything that happened in the second half of the season.

Scott Frost was coming home.

HE had returned. It was the right coach at the right time and the right place. That doesn't happen to us, here, very often.
Everything was going smoothly. Frost was back. He was bro-hugging with Jason Peter, he was doing pressers with a fat Wood-River-style dip of chaw in. And he was gutting it.

Old men didn't need Cialis for weeks, when they found out he was fully bringing back the Walkon Program.
He looked and sounded like the antithesis to Mike Riley. He was swagged out, impossibly jacked, and confident. I don't even know if he owns a pair of pleated khakis.

Then the season kicked off.

My favorite #Huskers football memory/moment from each year of the 2010s. (Think, not the best/worst, so much, as just the things I like to get drunk and discuss at length with my friends.) #GBR

A Thread.
2010: Taylor Martinez calling his Dad from the locker room on a burner phone during halftime of the Texas A&M game.

Was it actually a burner? No. Would I have kept a secret cellphone to secretly send out some Bo Pelini stories to someone? Yes.
Can you imagine how scathingly, insanely, napalm angry Bo must've been when he came around the corner and Martinez was like, "Oh, fuck. Gotta go, Dad..."

He probably shot magma directly from his eyes. Great story. Weird story. Endlessly fascinating moment.

Listen, I'm ready for this #Huskers team to come out and play with some Fuck you energy. Some real black-hat, burn down the establishment villain shit. Because: what have we got to lose? #GBR
This can still be a really fun season. It's incredibly blissful, when you finally accept the freedom of going fully off the rails. Why not turn Scott Frost into Hunter S. Thompson and just kind of get weird?
Let's run some trick plays. Let's throw Martinez out wide and let McCaffery chuck it to him deep. Let's let Mario Verduzco give a post-game press conference that somehow references Sun Tzu AND some obscure study about apples that shows their restorative health properties.

Look at some of the quotes from this INSANE article from July of 1972 Sports Illustrated about some guys graduating from the #Huskers. #GBR Image

(I wrote this last year, about Scott Frost & the #Huskers' 0-4 start. Still applies.)

THREAD

Imagine, if you will, that you are from a small town somewhere in rural Nebraska. A tight-knit, fiercely proud community.
Where "everyone knows everyone" is as certain as the one-finger-steering-wheel-wave you're going to get when you inevitably make eye contact with someone driving down the main drag of town.
Now, imagine that you left that town and went on to achieve unprecedented success. You are a hotshot brain surgeon that appears on CNN as a guest panelist, or you're a startup company mogul that's making millions off a hot new app.

FADE IN:
PJ FLECK stares out onto the tarmac as a single plane taxis towards him. His usual boundless, douchey, enthusiasm is nowhere to be found.

(Creepy Music begins building)

He listlessly checks his $4,000 watch.
The plane inches closer.

(Music gets more ominous.)

The plane haphazardly nudges up against the gate.

CLOSE UP: FLECK sits up, taking note.
FLECK: (out loud, to no one) That's not normal. I'm gonna have to row this damn boat on over there and take a look.

Wow. You gotta hand it to Bill Moos. This is a bold vision for Nebraska's future.

One of the rooms in the building is just a giant vault full of creatine for Scott Frost to swim in like Scrooge McDuck.
Another one of the rooms has Ndamukong Suh and Tommie Fraziers' stolen Heisman trophies.

On throwback day, here's a young Willa Cather defending football: "Of course it is brutal. So is Homer brutal, and Tolstoi; that is, they all alike appeal to the crude savage instincts of men. We have not outgrown all our old animal instincts yet, heaven grant we never shall!
"The moment that, as a nation, we lose brute force, or an admiration for brute force, from that moment poetry and art are forever dead among us, and we will have nothing but grammar and mathematics left...
"A good football game is an epic, it rouses the oldest part of us. Poetry is great only in that it suggests action and rouses great emotions. The world gets all its great enthusiasms and emotions from pure strains of sinew.”
