Just went to the Gandhi Hospital burns ward. Victim Sharanappa was fully conscious and communicating clearly. He explained who exactly poured petrol and burnt him. The criminal is a known local goon, the police are unable to arrest him even now. Image

1/Reactions to #HyderabadEncounter including my own got me thinking. Movies like Singham, Gangajal, Simbha, Shootout at Lokhandwala are hugely poplar and do well at box office. The rogue but good cop who fights the system including his own dept to deliver vigilante justice to...
2/.. those oppressed by the neta-criminal-cop nexus. Somewhere this theme touches a chord deep within us, as have the Hyderabad killings. The common person's belief in the system to deliver justice quickly is very low, and that's founded on the track record. Police reforms.......
3/.. Judicial reforms, electoral reforms - these have remained mere slogans and our justice delivery system has fallen into complete utter disarray. It starts from the legislature, where money & muscle power has become vital ingredient to election. Legislators are commodities...

Hyderabad police- Good job catching culprits with Great speed.

I am all for a speedy Justice System- But worried about Encounter killing

The extremely slow judicial system drove the public to cheer such "Justice delivery"
But in the long run this trend would be dangerous.
India certainly needs a Speedy Justice system. People have lost confidence. Serious reforms are needed urgently

However Encounter killing are NOT a replacement for speedy justice

In the long run this trend is very dangerous for our society, Democracy and even for public safety

On LRC @ndtv w/ @nidhi alongside Vrinda Grover, Dushyant Dave, Mamta Kale, and Vikram Singh this evening.

End of the day I've more questions abt the #HyderabadEncounter than answers.

1) Can women ever be safe in a country where the police is rewarded for flouting rule of law?
@ndtv @Nidhi 2) Thr wr 3k encounters in the 1st 16 mths of Adityanath's rule- did they deter crime? Did Ram Singh's suspicious death deter brutal rape?

3) Can the very elements underpinning rape culture- toxic masculinity, disregard for life + dignity, fearlessness of law be antidotes to it?
@ndtv @Nidhi 4) What do emotions have to do w/ the criminal justice system? The state prosecutes criminals not the aggrieved.

5) The men killed today will forever legally be innocent because they were not subjected to trial. Is that the justice the victim deserves?
