The Princely State of Hyderabad was ruled by Mir Osman Ali.
The Independence of India Act, 1947 offered the choice to the Princely States, of joining either IN or PK based on geographical contiguity & or the people's wishes. Hyderabad had none.
In a reverse of the situation in Kashmir, Hyderabad was a Hindu majority State ruled by a Muslim Nawab. There was no question of a referendum by the Nawab, since it was clear what the outcome would be. Image
The Nawab asked the British for a special status for HYD as a constitutional monarchy under the British Commonwealth. The request was denied.

The Nawab nevertheless went ahead with his own foreign policy by appointing agents in Europe.

THREAD on 'Hyderabad Liberation Day'& the Telangana (peasant)Armed rebellion
The centre is observing a year-long event to mark the annexation of the erstwhile #Hyderabad state to India on Sept 17 1948
The reality of it is more complex (1/n)
#HyderabadLiberationDay
The state of #Hyderabad was formally annexed on September 17, 1948, through a military offensive called Operation Polo, after negotiations between India and the Hyderabad state failed. The state's last Nizam was Osman Ali Khan, who decided to stay independent after #partition
At that time, communist-backed peasants were waging a full-scale armed rebellion against landlords in Telangana. It continued till 1951, until the CPI called it off. Osman Ali Khan, the world’s richest man then, was also monarch of the largest princely state under British India.

#TodayInHistory Operation Polo begins in 1948, the military action or rather "police action" which ensured Hyderabad would not end up as another Kashmir. This thread takes a look at the events leading up to it, as well as the backdrop.
The State of Hyderabad stretched from Aurangabad in the North West to Mahbubnagar in the South East, from Adilabad in the North East to Raichur in the South West. It covered the present day Marathwada in Maharashtra, Northern Karnataka, and the Telangana region.
It had a population of 16.34 million as per the 1941 census, the majority of whom were Hindu, around 85%, with Muslims making up 12% and the rest being Christians, Sikhs, Parsis. Though predominantly Telugu speaking , it had fairly good number of Kannada, Marathi, Urdu speakers.

Remembering Makhdoom Mohiuddin, communist legend and (one of the) leaders(s) of the anti-Nizam/anti-feudal #Telangana Armed Struggle (1946-51)

Saw CPI workers paying tributes to one of our most progressive figures. Here's more about his life
The irony of the BJP’s 'Liberation day' observance is that it was literally a non-player in 1948. Its ideological parent, the RSS, was barely present. In Telangana, it was the Communist Party of India which had taken over most of the rural areas. People like Makhdoom headed it.
Some background: After the British formally left India in 1947, it gave monarchs of princely states the option to join India/Pakistan or to stay independent.
Osman Ali Khan was one of the handful of kings, like Hari Singh of Jammu and Kashmir, who wanted to stay independent

Greetings to everyone on the auspicious occasion of
#HyderabadLiberationDay.

Let us remember the bravehearts who laid their lices for the freedom of this land.

The rule of Nizam was as oppressive as British rule and Hindus were the worst victim of it.

#HyderabadMuktiSangram
But our freedom fighters faced all oppression to bring an end to this immoral regime.

#HyderabadMuktiSangram
Let us also remember Iron Man of India Sardar Patel Ji who ordered Operation Polo, the military operation by the Indian Army that forced Nizam to surrender and leave the country.

Had Sardar not taken the initiative, Hyderabad would still be under the Jihadi Nizamat!

The Original Surgical Strike, Operation Polo ends on September 17th, 1948. The last Nizam and his armies from hell, the Razakars surrender to the Indian troops after 3 days of hostilities. Hyderabad is liberated and enters the Indian Union.

We remain indebted to Sardar Patel.
An often forgotten role in ensuring the fire for indepedence remained in the people of Hyderabad is of the Hindu Maha Sabha and the Arya Samaj. They led the people's revolt envisaging Hyderabad should join the newly formed India.
The efforts of the Andhra Maha Sabha, an organisation of the Telugu speaking folk of the Hyderabad state also need to be remembered. They eventually joined hands with the Communists against the Razakars.

#HyderabadLiberationDay #MarathwadaMuktiSangramDin Thread on how Ganapati Celebrations, Nizam's follies, Razakar terror, common people's bravery, deft political manoeuvres, armed resistance, daring attempts, rapid 'police' action #OperationPolo led to Sept 17th, 1948.
When Lokmanya Tilak gave the call for Sarvajanik Ganapati celebrations in 1893, one of the first few people to answer his call outside MH were from Hyderabad..! In 1894, the Marathi speaking population of Hyd started Public celebrations of Ganapati at 2 locations.
One was at Shah Ali Banda. Arya Samaji Gore Shastri of Vaidik Dharma Prakashika installed the Ganapati near Akkanna Madanna temple. The other was installed by students of Osmania University in the Deodi of Bellap Hanumantha Rao near Hari Masjid Sultan Bazar.

Let me tell you a small story, the story behind the iconic song Bandenaka Bandi Katti, by Yadagiri, who became famous as Bandi Yadagiri. The version sung by Gaddar in Maa Bhoomi is a slightly distorted version of the original -
#HyderabadLiberationDay
The original one contained reference to Reddys in place of Nizam Sarkar. No, Yadagiri wasn't targetting the Reddys. His choice of abuse was Visnur Deshmukh Rapaka Ramchandra Reddy, the one famous for Bairanpalli massacre.
He is considered one of the most brutal and rapacious of Nizam's men and ran a reign of terror from Visnur while his mother made Kadivendi Gadi her base. The word Gadi is used for the forts of these Zamindars and they usually maintained a private army to run their show.
