Looking forward to the opening plenary of #IASFM17 with @vanhear53 presenting his work with Robin Cohen on Imagining Refugia. Really not a fan of this idea but happy to be persuaded otherwise...
Various ‘solutions’ have been proposed over recent years many of which focus on the idea of creating islands or states in which refugees could live ‘out of sight, out of mind’, presumably #IASFM17
‘Refugia’ is transnational variant of this idea which focuses on ‘where’ question...I’m already feeling uneasy...since when was ‘refugeeness’ a good basis for building communities? Refugees are many things other than their migration experience #IASFM17

Good to have the perspectives of refugees themselves represented at #IASFM17 but it’s the tail end of Day 3. These voices should be front and centre. We have build our careers on backs of forced migrants, we absolutely have to start with refugees and include them in every aspect Image
And so important to have direct/literal interpretation rather than the interpreter adding their own comments or thoughts about the speakers situation and experiences.

#IASFM keynote from @JC_Hathaway who begins by reminding us that the vast majority of refugees globally are stuck in dire conditions with limited resources and opportunities whilst the EU spends €16.5 BILLION on processing a tiny proportion of those in need Image
What’s on the table in terms of reform is thin at best and potentially very dangerous. Call for ‘soft law’ solutions by Betts and Collier don’t engage with political realities. UNHCR meanwhile is simply reinventing the wheel #IASFM17
UNHCR’s solution in the form of the Global Compact on Refugees offers no meaning solutions just opportunities for “lots and lots of talk” days @JC_Hathaway #IASFM17

Important panel discussion on access to legal aid and support for status determination processes. Without rights people are often unable to access other things generally considered more important or pressing including food, shelter, education #IASFM17 Image
Importance of strategic litigation to challenge the ways in which refugees are treated, may not always be successful but can change the direction and content of the conversation #IASFM17
Strategic ligation should, however, understood within broader processes of social change, needs to be oriented towards addressing systemic issues which might engage a wider group #IASFM17
