The #ICA23-PostCon about #SciCom was great. One random stranger took this picture of our happy group, but she is not the only person to thank. (1/9) A group of people in front ...
The fine people @UofT’s John M. Kelly Library were great (spontaneous!) hosts for our group. When we had to quickly find a room, they willingly opened the door to us (with @JohnBesley paving the way). (2/9)
Organizing this post-conference was a group effort with @msc_lab’s staff: @Malarija, @pgiuliav, @JL_Egelhofer, and yours truly – thus putting @VolkswagenSt’s efforts in supporting #scicomm to good work. (3/9)

The deadline for #ica23 is coming closer (Nov 1! 😵‍💫) and as many of you are probably working on your manuscripts right now, here are some tips and resources that might help you to prepare your paper. [1/13] @icahdq @ICA_CAT
Disclaimer: Some of you might know this (type of) thread from me—it is an updated version of the one I posted for #ica22 (which is an updated version of a thread I posted for #ica19). [2/13]
First, save yourself some time and get an APA template (see Professional sample paper): apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-… - now you *just* have to put in the content. Easy, right? [3/13]

Attending an academic conference soon?
Going by reports and polls on Twitter, you probably have a 10-20% chance of getting #COVID19 there.
Here's a small thread with some evidence and some suggestions. 1/
2/ ACM #SIGGRAPH, a major conference and trade fair with up to 20,000 attendees, will take place in Vancouver next month, right in time for the peak of a COVID wave.
That means that probably 2000 people will return home infected with COVID.
3/ Of these 2000 people with COVID, a few hundred people will be knocked out for a few days or weeks.
About 1% might suffer from *debilitating* #LongCOVID effects - i.e. 20 attendees will suffer from a major illness for weeks or months or more.

My blog post on this is here: marginstwenty.home.blog/2022/05/29/on-… The piece includes discussion of the “controlling anxieties” (aka oppressive expectations and norms) of universities, such as their concerns regarding reputational management and their (un)controllable public image. #ica22
Drawing on Black feminist work, we consider the relationship between “controlling images” (see Patricia Hill Collins) and what we term “controlling anxieties” which institutions express in ways that convey who / what they deem to be “deviant” + in need of “disciplining”. #ica22
Examples of “controlling anxieties” in action include the loaded institutional framing of Black women scholars who unis position as exceptional / praiseworthy in ways that uphold respectability politics, and can constitute a form of “controlling image” reframed as support. #ica22

I was supposed to present my and @evoluchico’s thoughts on how the field of disinformation studies could be reformed at the #ica22 pre-conference #afterdisinfo (unc.live/39Motq9)

As I sadly cannot attend, I summarise it here…📝 Too Big to Fail. Reforming Disinformation Studies from the I
Disinformation is now firmly entrenched in various academic disciplines & well-funded by various actors. Journalists continue to display a keen interest not least given a multitude of crises which regularly bring the topic back into focus.
This is not necessarily a bad thing. Disinformation studies—the loose assortment of researchers, activists, journalists, & policymakers devoted to the study of the creation, distribution & reception of misleading information—has had positive & negative effects.
