BREAKING: The UN aviation agency @ICAO has just adopted a new long-term climate target - #NetZero by 2050

It's highly insufficient & will lead to the aviation industry massively overshooting its fair share of global emissions: stay-grounded.org/factsheets/net…
#ICAOA41 #FlyNetZero
🧵 1/9
#ICAOA41 #NetZero: No binding targets

#ICAO's net-zero target is not binding for states. They still have no obligation to reduce emissions sufficiently to meet the 1.5 degree limit.
2/9
#ICAOA41 #NetZero: No intermediate targets

ICAO's net-zero target does not include interim targets until 2050, but if aviation continues to grow as expected, it will have used up its fair share of the remaining emissions budget well before 2050.

Unveiled: The UN aviation agency (@ICAO) is captured by corporate interests 📈🤑!

Right in time for #ICAOA41 a new report by @Influencemap reveals how corporate interests influence the global climate policy at the UN agency for aviation.

Why is this so concerning?
🧵⬇️ Laughing Leo Meme, text: "That feel when you influence
.@ICAO has some serious and concerning transparency issues:

🤐 Non-disclosure agreements for delegates to join closed-door meetings
🔒 secret climate negotiations
🚫 media bans for key climate meetings

30% of delegates at #ICAO climate meetings since the Paris Agreement directly represented the aviation or fossil fuel industries, as the report shows.

So industry delegates outnumber environmental representatives 7️ to 1️ ‼️ #ICAO41

CORSIA Baseline Change: Aviation’s Climate Regulation Is Broken Beyond Repair

Our press release on @icao's decision to change the baseline of the #CORSIA #offsetting programme.
stay-grounded.org/corsia-baselin…
#CORSIA is a total wreck beyond repair. In fact, it was broken from the very beginning. It covers a tiny fraction of aviation’s projected emissions and completely ignores the huge climate impact of airplane emissions other than CO2.
#CORSIA relies on harmful offsets and biofuels, both neo-colonial measures that shift the problems to communities in the Global South. The scheme is not only a means for greenwashing aviation: holding on to it also blocks effective regulation and leads to further problems.

Both #Delhi and #Tehran made catastrophic decisions.

After initial denial, both had to admit failure.

#Iran can't get away by scapegoating a low-ranking official, downing an enemy plane is never a tactical decision. An officer of the level of major general or brigadier would have approved and directed. Allowing field commanders to act on their own proves lack of professionalism.

In the upcoming days, major decisions will be taken in Montreal concerning the future of aviation and climate heating!

The @icao proposes to achieve “carbon neutral growth” for international aviation using “alternative” fuels and carbon offsets, under the #CORSIA scheme.
The Problem: CORSIA is a dangerous, deeply flawed distraction that will result in more, not less emissions!

#Bahrain, #Egypt, #SaudiArabia & #UAE have filed two separate joint applications against #Qatar at the #ICJ, seeking to appeals two recent decisions by the #ICAO Council in parallel litigation involving these states. Qatar already has a pending case against UAE at the ICJ.
The decision to file a joint application at the #ICJ is novel. Applicant states that are coordinating a joint action have typically filed separate applications (eg, Lockerbie, Nuclear Tests, South West Africa), which may be handled together administratively or formally joined.
I think you need to go back to the Wimbledon case at the PCIJ (the predecessor to the ICJ) to find an example of a joint application, but please correct me if I'm wrong about that.
