Take 15 mins. Watch this video. It's more important to you than you know.

This is what China is doing, but Western governments are on exactly the same path #technologically; they just have a different set of #rationalisations.

The #DatabaseState isn't coming. It's already here.
It doesn't matter if your Government's #justification is #innovation ("AI is cool!"), #PublicSafety ("Think of the kids!"), or #efficiency ("People are expensive, let's use algorithms instead") - installing the #tools of #totalitarianism only ends up in one place.

It was true...
...of @ukhomeoffice's centralised #biometric National Identity Register - the heart of the #IDcards scheme in the 2000s - and is as true of @DCMS's "Identity & Attributes Trust Framework" 👇 of which the first 'adopters' include the #HomeOffice (again)...

Meanwhile, and despite MONTHS of denials*, it turns out the Government has already spent £23.6 million on #VaccinePassports 👇 and has already cut deals that could run until 2023 at least...

Hmm. Knowing a little about newspapers, it's quite possible David himself didn't write the headline and blurb - though the thrust of his review is clear, the direct reference to sex as a "social construct" is Joyce's quote: Image
I'm not so sure that isn't a #StrawMan; an extreme position being characterised as if it were the nub of the debate. I don't know, but can't imagine many would vehemently disagree with these commonly held definitions:

(Though I expect there are nuances.)
I first encountered grassroots #trans groups in the '00s when campaigning against @ukhomeoffice #IDcards & the #NationalIdentityRegister.

They were generous, tolerant & open - explaining to someone with no knowledge the many challenges of #transition, including living with an...

Here's a fun #NINO - the UK's National Insurance Number - [Thread] to start the weekend 👇

Maybe I should do an #NHSnumber one sometime? It's a fascinating story, which (ironically) starts with these...
[With thanks to @guy_herbert, @TomSamaki, @PrivacyMatters & others for encouragement!]

Before I start a geeky 'deep dive' on the #NHSnumber, to provide some (personal/professional) context that will hopefully become apparent, I'll just drop these two images here:
So, to begin.

After the Second World War, in a time when we started to think (again) what a #civilised society would be, and when our leaders tried to agree #principles like #UDHR that might prevent the recurrence of genocide, and support #dignity and #HumanRights for all...

*sigh*

Tony's STILL banging on about #IDcards, nearly 20yrs later - 'cos make no mistake, that's what #VaccinePassports will become.

Just as WWII's [left 👇] became @10DowningStreet/@ukhomeoffice's [right 👇] with a centralised #biometric #NationalIdentityRegister behind it... ImageImage
...so will #YellowCards [left 👇] morph into 'just an #app on your #phone' [right 👇] - claimed to be 'not #mandatory', of course (unless you want to live your life, work or travel...) and with the centralised #biometric #registration Government has wanted all along. ImageImage
So here's a few questions the #HealthPassport headbangers must answer:

1a) When Heathrow re-opens, given (current) #vaccines don't prevent #transmission, aren't people still going to have to be #tested?

1b) If people have to be tested anyway, what's the point of the 'passport'?

Hmm. Maybe @DCMS could explain the "regulatory barriers" to "secure digital identities" 👇 and - if indeed they exist - why they weren't addressed for, say, @GOVUKverify? They've had a decade to do this, after all...

...and I think @DCMS will find that people have been doing online #shopping and #banking quite happily for many years before #COVID19, without the need for #GovernmentID!

In what way has this "become essential" now? Image
#DigitalSignatures for contracts are indeed a use case. But again, I've been using them (e.g. with my accountant) for years. And getting the Government involved in what it acknowledges is already a stressful process seems... counterintuitive. Some might even say risky! Image
