Do I have a story for you!

On this weekโ€™s episode of Judicial History, we meet Burnita Shelton Matthews โ€“ the first woman to serve as a U.S. District Judge. We also have love โค๏ธ, perseverance ๐Ÿ’ช, and even a cameo by Amelia Earhart ๐Ÿ›ฉ๏ธ.

Burnita Shelton was born in 1894 โ€“ one of 6 children and the only ๐Ÿ‘ง.

She gravitated toward law but her father pushed her to study music as it was more "ladylike." So she attended conservatory ๐ŸŽผ, but asked relatives to send her law books to read in her spare time ... ๐Ÿ“š

Soon after, Burnita married Percy Matthews ๐Ÿ’’, who then enlisted to fight in WWI. Burnita traveled to DC so that she could attend one of the few law schools that would accept ๐Ÿ‘ฉ.

When her father found out, he had a change of โค๏ธ and offered to pay her tuition, but she refused!

The Supreme Court was born in 1789 (thanks to the Judiciary Act of that year) and lived, ever so briefly, in the Royal Exchange Building right here. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Bonus Fun Fact: Before the Court convened, the federal court for the District of New York sat in the building on Nov. 3, 1789 โ€“ making it the 1st federal court to sit under the new Constitution!๐Ÿฅ‡
