🔴 #Sikkim makes headlines‼️

🟡2 weeks ago New York Times published an article on SIKKIM and it’s declining population.

🟡Yes, it’s true Sikkim’s TFR (total fertility rate) is declining. According to stats on an avg every woman had about 1 child. Image
🟡Govt is now encouraging 3 children per family

🟡 govt is ready to pay attendants ready to look after infants, Rs 10,000 per month

🟡Reasons for low TFR— female labour participation in the state is 59% as compared to 29%; Men go to other states for work and get married late.
🟡 Govt had introduced VATSALYA scheme: A women-centric scheme where an amount of Rs. 3 lakhs of financial assistance for treating infertility would be given to couples having difficulty in conceiving where the couples can undergo In-vitro Fertilization (#IVF) treatment.

India sees around 3.37L cycles of IVF in a year & AIIMS Research says this is only slated to grow with Marriageable age on the rise in India . They expect 10-15% of married couples will undergo this treatment.

IVF typically costs are 1.5-2L today . Do your maths
I was reminded of MILANN from the HCG stable . Though tiny today , growing aggressively.

Management wanted to divest it off few years back , but I guess sensing the opportunity has changed course & now is focusing on growing .

@SenDuckworth @GerryConnolly As a Federal employee, I participated in the FEHB program. Blue Cross/Blue Shield FEP didn't cover my #IVF treatments. I had to pay out of pocket.
@SenDuckworth @GerryConnolly #IVF only gives a woman a chance to have a baby, and the probability gets worse as a woman gets older. (1/2)

Very happy to share our new @biorxivpreprint showing that phenotypic correlations between in vitro fertilization (#IVF) sibling embryos provide predictive value regarding an embryo’s future implantation potential!

biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

🧵

1/n Image
We started by showing that embryos from the same cohort are phenotypically correlated

2/n Image
The implantation potential of transferred embryos was associated with the phenotype of their non-transferred “sibling”. Siblings’ phenotypes contribute to image-based machine learning embryo implantation prediction for models trained with morphology/morphokinetic features!

Fertility Awareness Week starts tomorrow.

Great to see more orgs developing policies/provisions, media attention & private members bill going through Parliament, but much work still to be done

Want to do something in your org? Here's some tips...

#IVF #wellbeing #EDI
1. Start a narrative that people can connect to. Consider posters/a blog and signpost to relevant support services internally/externally @FertilityNUK @BICAuk @gatewaywomen @ChildlessWeek

mentalhealthatwork.org.uk/blog/how-might…
2. Appreciate the highly individualised nature of complex fertility journeys, and ensure line managers are aware too & know how they can help. This might be via policy development, training and resources.

The Aus Senate this Weds will vote on so-called 'three-parent #babies'. These would be #donorconceived babies, genetically the child of 3 people not 2, made by an unregulated, for-profit industry, where there are serious questions about the future for the resulting child. A 🧵
Three-parent babies are made from #mitochondrialDNA donation. For eg: you fertilise a would-be mother's egg, and a donor egg. You suck the middle (the pronucleus) out of both. You put the would-be mother's pronucleus in the 'shell' of the donor egg. You gestate the embryo.
This is to avoid a child inheriting mitochondrial disease from the mother. What it means is: the child inherits DNA from 3 people - bio father, the would-be mother, and the donor. This *is inheritable*. If it's a girl baby, DNA from THREE people will be passed on to her children.

Here is a prime example of how the baby-above-all-else narrative triumphs over fact in the #media: a 🧵. Let's start with criminal offences. In fact, overseas commercial #surrogacy is ILLEGAL for residents of NSW. Sydney, obviously, is NSW's capital. @smh fails to mention this.
International #commercialsurrogacy is also illegal for residents of the ACT and QLD. This article does not state this either. It fails to mention where these people are from. It does not question the legality of their actions.
Why is commercial #surrogacy a criminal offence in NSW? Well, because of 'considerable medical, ethical, legal and human rights concerns', which include the exploitation of surrogates and the resulting children. #fertility #infertility #law #ivf #donorconception #humanrights

In #IVF & #Infertility, Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) #genetictesting #Genetics is a complicated & controversial issue. PGT-A has pros & cons and "one size does NOT fit all" when it comes to its appropriateness for individual cases. Please see thread 🧵

The Case of Broken Dreams - when conducting ‘Operation Spring Clean’ my sister came across this case in her loft. It is full of baby clothes that I gave to her when she was expecting her twins and I knew I would have no more children...
I am close to my family. I would do anything for them. And have. I left my job in Kenya overnight and cared for my sister for months when she was at death’s door, I gave her a bone marrow transplant and a few years later, eggs so she could have a family...
The untimely death of her girls, Lily and Faith, just about ruined my belief in pretty much everything, and seeing her devastation and repeated bravery humbled me in ways I have never forgotten, from planning her funeral (thankfully that was miraculously unnecessary) ...

#njcurj#IVF Journey The road leading to IVF is different for every woman. I had the opportunity to sit down with a young lady age 23. Her IVF Journey was unexpected as she seemed healthy. She was married and wanted to become pregnant. After countless attempts and failure.
#njcurj#IVF The couple sought help. Her OBGYN informed the of the unexpected news that she had blockage and unable to conceive naturally. The doctor then advised that she may be a candidate for IVF. She was given by her doctor the IVF clinic information to further discuss
#njcurj#IVF she, her husband and doctor called for a scheduled appointment at well known IVF clinic. Within two weeks she received her confirmed appointment at the IVF clinic. She unfortunately did not educate herself on the IVF procedure nor did her husband.

There’s been a lot of cheerful chatter in the last week about the prospects of post-#COVID19 #Babyboom.

Will that actually happen? Do we want that to happen?

I have some thoughts...
Last week @TMZ quoted Shark Tank investor, and apparently fertility expert, Daymond John as saying, “We definitely will see a baby boom, 100%". An outcome they described as a "one very good side effect".

nypost.com/2020/03/08/sha…
The belief here is that being confined to your home during a global pandemic and massive economic downturn is pretty much the same when the power was out for two days during the New York Blackout. But that "baby boom" was pure urban legend. sciencedaily.com/releases/2004/…

1/3 Today I share my #childlessnotbychoice story at @linsdrabwell childfree blog. I am nowhere near to saying I am childfree, but I am now comfortable with saying I am childless not choice and that being #childless doesn't define me. I am more than what I am not. Image

1/3 Yesterday I was at Childless @StoryhouseLive a wonderful day of talks & sharing of experiences of being childless not by choice in a family-centric world. Left inspired and with developing connections within the warm, friendly & understanding childless community. Image
2/3 Thanks to @DawnLlewellyn & @spruceyhaigh for organising & @StoryhouseLive for hosting. Lovely to chat to @gatewaywomen about creating a space for men, certainly will explore further & @RobinHadley1 about his research into men & childlessness, paving the way in academia.
