I was born in Medellin, Colombia as the oldest of three siblings. My family belonged to the low-middle class, so my parents always inculcated school and knowledge as the best opportunity to have a good and successful career and future. #IWSvoices #WomenInSTEM @IWS_Network Image
Since my earlier years I was disciplined, independent and curious and I always had a deep desire for new knowledge. That's why science, biology and philosophy were my favourite courses, and the reason why I would later become a scientist. #IWSvoices #WomenInSTEM @IWS_Network Image

I was born in the 1980s, in the suburbs of Divinopolis, a small city in the Minas Gerais state, 🇧🇷 (right in the middle of the country, so, no beaches there). I’m the oldest of 4 children. I was a happy child who could play in the streets and climb trees.

I also watched a lot of 📺and this helped to develop my passion for science. One of my favourite shows was Beakman’s World. I wanted to be a scientist like him. But I had never met any scientist. I wasn’t even sure if this profession really existed in 🇧🇷.

My passion for biology started in high school, because of one very enthusiastic teacher. I’ll never forget my first lab class and she saying: “look at those mitochondria, how beautiful they are!” I decided that I’d be a biologist.

@IWS_Network @universitelaval @unil @UBC I left home at a young age, and was super excited to start a new adventure in Canada @UBC . At that time, I thought this is going to be my biggest adventure. Little did I know it was just the beginning. #IWSvoices @IWS_Network.
@IWS_Network @universitelaval @unil @UBC My first experience in a lab was with the late world-renowned researcher, Dr. El-Husseini's. It was an overwhelming experience. But I owe everything to the back-then PhD student who took me under her wings

My mom and me rather look like sisters. Despite being a teenager when she got me, she sacrificed her whole life to raise me up. She made sure I had the best #education possible. I am forever grateful to my mom sis & do everything to make her and God #proud. #IWSVoices 2/n Image

My first months in Canada were rocky to say the least. Had a lot of #depression episodes, felt like giving up & didn’t know where to turn for help or how to ask for help. In retrospect, It was a lack of professional & social support system. I wish I knew #IWS by then!

Months went by before I realized I should motivate myself & be grateful for the #chance I've been given! After a year, I returned back to "normal", my old, happy and motivated self. I was #thrilled to wear the toga on my graduation, no togas in #Dutch graduations! #IWSVoices Image
I was graduated now what? Visited many jobfairs and went to resume workshops. Still couldn't land a scientific job. Worked as customer service agent and inventory control asistant at Cirque du Soleil & David's Tea resp. The job quest continues. #IWSVoices #jobhunting #polyvalent Image
